Plumbers putty backstop

The stuff I use as in post 5 is quite a bit firmer and works out at about the same price Kg for Kg as it weighs 2.3Kg. I use half a pack to cover one of my A4 target plates.

Just bought 3 tubs from screwfix. I have a few targets, mainly want to quieten the rat bait station, as sometimes the alarm goes off at 3am and don't want to annoy the neighbours.
Will trial on one of my targets and if successful then load up the rat station. All are currently lead filled baking trays, so I may mount the trays onto a wooden backing, to further dampen the noise

Regarding thickness, a bit depends on the solidity of the plate behind it.
I had a baking sheet, over a wooden backstop, and about half inch of plumbers mait. The .177 pellet would penetrate and bend/dent the baking sheet.
There was a small air gap between the sheet and the wood behind it.
A solid metal target holder, with about the same thickness stopped them fine.
I think it is a sort of non Newtonian effect, but it does need something to bounce the energy off.

Now I have a layer of plumber mait and bit of lead flashing over the top, catches the lead.

Put it into heavy duty plastic bags and tape it to retain shape better.

When it gets really battered I stick the old bag(s) into a new one and carry on shooting.

Edit - use latex gloves when handling it

This is my check zero and 10 yard fun plinking 14cm target box. It has a steel 4mm offcut stuck inside so I'll fill it with the putty and report back. View attachment 676154

I's say on that 12mm would be fine, if it gets too deep the thing just gets heavier and the pellets harder to dig out (if you intend to).

little bit of a hijack but still relevent,
How easy is it to retreive your shot pellets from this stuff as I turn mine into ingots and weigh them in.

I use forceps, and imagine myself in western movies digging bullets out of people.
(I don't really, at least not all the time)
It can be strangely relaxing.
