Hi all!

Ive got a couple of cheap recurve bows,

Decided i quite like shooting them.

Please advise

Id like more power, and also ease?

What do we think of compound bows?

Advice on a decent recurve bow set up would be apperciated

Thank you!

Compound bows are more like a rifle, you can hold for longer and pull a trigger but personally I just prefer the authenticity of a recurve.

Also due to the extra power the arrows are a pain to pull out of the target with a compound unless you use...arrow lube...

I shoot at a 3D archery club and shoot mainly compound, but I’m going to actually sell the full kit on and just shoot trad bow from now on, it’s just lighter to carry around the course. If you’re wanting a more powerful bow and with less strain on your body then a compound bow is the way to go. Are you shooting at a target club, 3D club or just on your own land at a target boss?

Thanks for the reply, just messing around on my own turf atm. Whats a 3d club?

It's a club where you walk around a course in a wooded area and it's set out with different animal targets. Life size foam targets with scoring zones. Generally 40 targets but can differ from club to club, some pegs are multi shots or predator/prey scenarios. I find it better than standing in front of a target boss though I do practice like that at times too.

With a recurve, ease of draw and power are inversely proportional. As power increases, so does the draw weight and with it the difficulty of getting it to full draw.
Compounds effectively offer a cheat via mechanical leverage so that's your only way around that. There are some very good ones about but either way as Kola says above, technique and accuracy are far more important. Also some (uk) clubs can be a bit sniffy about using compounds.

Looking at big draw weights as the main attraction is the equivalent of sticking an Ox spring in a B2. It's a waste of time and effort, and trying to go too extreme to start with is a virtually guaranteed way of knackering both your technique and your arms/back/shoulders /neck.
Also don't be deceived thinking that strength will substitute for technique.

Like other shooting, it's an equally large rabbit hole to go down once you start looking at trying to get to any level of being decent at it.

Also like other shooting it can be very entertaining and satisfying once you start to get it right.

Enjoy 👍

Like this clown does with the 240lb bow this guy ordered online , talk about biting off more than you can chew ... Homer face palm

This is an absolute classic fail video.

The less said about this so-called 'professional' archer the better , this is the absolute epitome of technique trumps 'strength' when it comes to heavy bows .... :ROFLMAO:

My questions/advice: -

What shooting discipline(s) do you want to major with?

My advice would be to join a club.

I have shot recurve and compound, but after my stroke in 2020, my bow arm (left) is compromised and I have not done any archery since then.

You also need to ascertain your dominant eye

I started out with an old Barnett compound bow. I cant remember the model but it was very long by todays standards with round cams so it was very forgiving to shoot, easy to draw even at 60lbs and enough let off to easily hold at full draw. The length made the string angle at full draw quite wide and I used to shoot it off my fingers and without a magnifying sight in the "Compound Limited" class. Even managed a couple of county records in the postal league, but that's probably because no one else was shooting in the limited class 🤣. It was a great way to start compound archery on a budget though, being not too fussy about arrow stiffness and less accessories to buy.

Good luck, it's great fun.
