Local pubs and start talking to the locals; stables and livery yards; parish magazines.

First, and most importantly, get yourself insured.
who would you advise for insurance basc or another company. i never used to need insurance before on the permission i used to have years ago so this is all new to me...thanks for the reply

You're risking it going out without insurance. About £50 a year. Most perms insist on it

As previously said, insurance and as predominately rats and rabbits are a night time exercises so have a red / green torch as back up but to be honest once you have set the rifle up, a spotter and NV on your rifle will put you in a better position to clear rats and rabbits properly and give out a I can do message to anyone and that will get you more permissions word of mouth is incredible

Good luck and get knocking on them farm gates 👍

Wow thats a decent bit of kit, friend of mine has one of those and the clear view is exceptional he loves it 👍
i use the Pard / Vulpine and Ward rear add ons and they work pretty well on a hawke scope

good luck and enjoy using the scope 👍

For ratting in a stationary position do you need a spotter. I can see the advantage but if you were using something like a primos with just a v-yoke, wouldn’t it be better to just use the scope as a spotter other won’t you need to keep taking the gun off the rest?

HI Nick
I don’t practice using the scope to spot to be honest, I use viper sticks with a high right hand sided saddle mount at the back which holds the rifle stock slots into perfectly hold with one hand and pointed at the ground, gives me the chance to have a look around safely with the thermal with out dropping the rifle
Nice and comfortable whether your sitting or standing/stalking them

The mount for the vipers a guy made me a set on a computer thingy where it carves it out precisely

Cheers

Phil, that’s great thank you. I don’t think I’ll be getting a thermal spotter anytime soon though. I think I’ll need to settle for an NV spotter at best.

just looked into the hikmicro le10s currently on sale at 399

Maybe in the new year. Think I’d have a divorce on my hands if I bought a spotter for that price at the min plus don’t even have a permission yet

I’m in no hurry at the moment, want to spend some time on the range first and then as we start getting in to winter I’ll be looking for a rat permission.

I carry 2 add ons one as a spare in case the thermal packs up, you can use them for spotting if you can get one with an IR even better you can pick them up at a nice price 👍

Good luck mate hope it all comes together
Cheers
