Hi,
As a recent convert to PCP rifles I was wondering how often do they usually need new seals and how expensive is it to get them replaced?

Welcome to PCP land.

Well, I've had PCPs that have blown an o-ring in less than 6 months from new and ones that still have their original ones for over 4 years. I don’t think there is a hard and fast rule to it. One of my friends has an FX streamline from the initial production run, and he’s not one to touch his rifles unless it stops working and he definitely has not changed a single o-ring in all that time 7 years, I think. looking on the bay. you can get say a full o-ring kit for an FX Wildcat mk2 for under £15 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/284126471432 I’m sure it would vary by make. and places line Chambers https://twchambers.co.uk/airgun-spares or Bagnall and Kirkwood https://spares.bagnallandkirkwood.co.uk/product-categories/ pretty much stock most things and have exploded diagrams for most rifles. if you can do it yourself than it's pretty cheap. if you’re going down the RFD route for service and repairs that it can vary from place to place for a PCP I would guess at £70 and up to get one serviced and parts on top of that. But FRDs might charge by the hour I don’t really know.

Thanks Mick, I hadn't even realised that one could buy kits to service them yourself... I will have a look around. My Kral hopefully will be good for a couple of years as it was bought brand new. I will also have a Youtube search to watch people service them. Thanks again for the response

Depends..... ;)
None of my pcps (touch wood) have needed anything other than an occasional pull through or external clean, some are many years old.
If you are confident/competent you could maybe work on them yourself, (eg: see AGF forum, google and youtube vids for guidance).
If not so confident, there are many on here and elsewhere who can work on them, incl many RFDs.
Obviously every gun is different, some may go years and years without the need for any work, and others have issues straight from the shop/supplier, just like every other device/appliance, car, toaster, TV, etc.
Cost would depend on the gun, its condition and whats wrong with it, could be £50 or it could be £250?

Thanks PJ I will look on here as well to see how challenging it could be, I don't really envisage doing it but I like to be prepared

Here's a link for my first pcp strip and rebuild.

It's a BSA, but all pcp's are similar and may give you an idea of whats what.

The best tool to use on a pcp is the knowledge, advice and help other AGF members can give along the way (y)

Only do work on them when they need it, your not going to gain much from preventative maintenance beyond a little TLC and tiny amounts of silicone oil on moving parts, some will go for decades before actually needing a service, others a few years Shrug tt

All I’ve changed in over 20 years of various PCP rifles is 2 breech seals and a gauge seal .
If it ain’t broken ……

I service pcp's that get very high use every week and all year round with no maintenance from the user.
the service interval is every 3 years and they are well in need of it.
On the other hand i have had some of my own pcp's that apart from changing pellet probe seal every 3 or 4 tins of pellets have run without issue for 10 years. The Average cost of a service via a RFD can be £100-£150.

This is good to know Greg, my rifle gets very little use. 100 shots per month as I have several and rotate them,

How much use has got to be a factor. I can't recall how many thousands of pellets I have put through my HW100 in the 10 months I have owned it. I have not touched it or removed the cylinder in that time but the main valve failed and needed changing, fortunately under warranty.

Stick with Weihrauch HW100 they are so simple and cheap to service yourself a full seal kit for less than £10 and the engineering is 1st class
