This is the one action I’m having issues with…

I’ve tried three new parting tools ( tool steel ), different speeds, and cutting oil but get melting every time. Never any melting issues with any other cuts and no need for cutting oil.

Any advice welcome. Only want to cut some baffle plates for moderator.

At it’s lowest height already on 6mm tooling, may have to try and get some 3mm unimat tooling

Sounds like you have something other than delrin, there are lots of sellers but no all of them are honest and call it delrin, but It's not there are several other engineering plastics that are similar but not the same when it comes to turning characteristics.

issue with your tooling or how your feeding it with your centre line, even if it was nylon it would just give a rough fluffy finish, you could part delrin with wood chisels

I think I’ve been sold nylon as Delrin by an ebay seller. Although some of his stuff I’m using doesn’t display the same ‘melting’.

I’ll measure up how much below the centreline the tool sits and post back

Show us your parting tool

Are you on centre or above ?
Do you get a pip ?

Can you show a pic of the setup

What speed you running on what dia material?

Speeds and feeds fella? (And diameter)?

HSS tools and cutting fluid (water based) works well on Acetal

Even cast nylon will cut nicely

It sounds (as other have said) like Nylon 66 or similar (but even that cuts reasonably well)

I use acetal rather than delrin even as it machines so easily. Never the less I would expect any to cut using a sharp HSS tool reasonable speed and set up correctly.

i have had some dubious “Delrin” recently where the cut finish shows signs of partial melting. I have even had it when drilling the “Delrin”.
One material that I have which contains nylon is awful to turn, drill and it looks and feels like Delrin until you try to machine it.

It does yes but the homopolymer vs copolymer is a lot stronger and more wear resistant.

When I was a teenager and first got my hands on a lathe my dad aways taught me, when in doubt, slow down. Good rule for parting off all kinds of material.
