Notion for a .410

Have you fitted a sling to yours?
Both .410's can take slings but I rarely fit them and sling the rimfires instead. The 410's are for short range targets of opportunity and depending on the situation I may stalk in closer but usually anything at longer ranges gives me time to get into a good position, put the shotgun on the ground an use the rimfire - well that's the plan anyway, there are times when I find myself with the wrong gun in hand!

Local RFD has a single barrel Charles Daly 10 (Turkish) .410 in a black synthetic stock that folds poacher style brand new & boxed for 180. I know I can get s/h cheaper but quite fancy a no-hassle, lifetime guarantee straightforward wee gun I can use as soon as bought as it's in the building! Quite like the idea of not working about scratches etc., as will be in the back of the Gator most of the time. Any thoughts/advice appreciated.
go for it

I think it seems to be quite common for a seasoned shooter to think back about the .410 as many of us started our shooting life with one and I am no different. I looked for an o/u but at the last minute I changed my thought process and bought a 28g and pleased I did as it is a superb gauge and capable of taking some amazing shots (when I manage to put the shot in the right place). My shooting pal decided to stay with the .410 approach and bought a Kofs o/u but never really came to terms with it.

I am building huge respect for my .410. Like @theshootist I'm viewing it as a great vermin controller. Not particularly cheap but it demands rifle skills and is supremely humane at reasonable range. Definitely not a starter for a child.

About a tenner for 25 🥹😢
Cheap as chips if you reload your own (well almost), easy enough to hand load with lots of info online, only ever bought the one slab of cartridges back in 2011 when I got a Bretton Gaucher Phantom and still got some of those, so enough cases to reload and see me out, also use brass cases for heavier loads, reloading components available (or were pre brexit, not sure now) from Siarm in France if you don't make your own wads etc.
Shot, powder and primers were also purchased in quantity at same time back in 2011 and about the only thing that I have beaten inflation with, future shot will come from old 12g cartridges that I can get 2 or 3 x 410 loads from.

Before you commit there are some things to consider, the cost of ammo, its main use and its limitations. The 410 is a gun with not much range compared to other shotguns but it can be quite useful out to around 30 yds. IMO a better gun would be a 28G which is not much bigger than a 410 but has a whole lot more range, if a 28 was coupled with a pair of 410 adaptors then you would have the best of both worlds. As far as ammo goes I suspect 28g ammo may be a little dearer than 410 but certainly worth it. I have watched a good shot with a 28 drop driven pheasants at 40yds and they were dead in the air.

I agree 100%

Thanks guys but have already bought the .410 and am throughly enjoying it, but will keep my eyes out for the 28G and hopefully get a shot of one at some point 👍🏼
