Hey all!

Whilst Field Target is my main variety of shooting, I enjoy a bit of 10m pistol and have a bit of a collection of them.

My main pistol is a Steyr EVO 10 and when I bought it, I was completely torn between that or a Walther LP500. There weren't many 'top end' pistols in my local club to try, being mostly the club Hammerli AP20's and the odd Steyr so in the end I opted for the EVO.

it's an absolutely superb pistol but I've always had the 'what if?' question burning in my mind so when the opportunity to snag this one came up at the right price, I said what the hell!

I didn't see that it was actually listed for sale on AGF Homer face palm and bought it via STB but here it is - my brand spanking new (to me!) LP500 that arrived today (y)

First impressions - what a stunning piece of kit!

It came with the original walnut grip and a blue laminate one, and I'm rather partial to a bit of blue laminate so that was a bonus!

It oozes quality, as you would expect for such a pistol and everything on it is rock solid and well finished. I adjusted the sight base length and rearsight to match my Steyr so it looks the same on the aim.

I think the Steyr has a slightly nicer balance being a tad more front heavy than this one, but that can easily be remedied with the supplied weights that fit inside the barrel shroud but I'll try it properly first before adjusting that.

The grip is lovely, though a bit sharp on the edge that rests against the middle finger. It's sharply cut and harshly stippled there compared to the Rink which is smoothed so I will probably smooth that out. It sound a bit wimpish haha, but after dry firing for about 20 minutes it felt like it was sandpapering my knuckle so I'll probably smooth that out a little for comfort on longer sessions.

I think the Steyr wins on grip adjustability. It has a system where you can adjust tilt in all axes that the grip relocates into the same each time if you ever need to take it off for any reason. This one has a kind of gimbal-like mount where you can adjust it and then tighten to lock down, but its not as easily adjusted or repeatable. Once it's set it shouldn't need to come off again though so it's not a major deal.

I do think the trigger on the Walther has the edge though over the Steyr. Cocking effort on both is effortless but the trigger on the Walther seems to have a slightly cleaner break. I haven't measured the pull weight, will need to dig out the trigger gauge to check that it is at the ISSF regulation 500g minimum for 10m pistol. It feels like it but I'll find out for sure later.

It came with the 300 BAR threaded adapter that goes directly on the cylinder as supplied by Walther which I'm not a big fan of as they need tools to change, and you have to unscrew the cylinders under pressure so I've ordered an adapter from Best Fittings with the foster quick-detach fitting that I use for my other PCP pistols which allows bleeding the valve before disconnecting.

I was out most of the evening so didn't get chance to put any shots through it but did some dry fire practice to get a feel for it in training mode where it doesn't discharge any air and it feels very stable on aim.

It's dark before I finish work and the weather looks set to be rubbish for the next few days so I doubt I'll get to try it properly until the weekend, but I'm really looking forward to comparing it to the Steyr and seeing how it performs!

Clash of the Titans haha!

That pic really shows how much the Rink grip has discoloured since I got it  It was light grey and a bright blue similar to the Walther and it's only a few years old. Not just from being handled either, it's darkened all over in areas that aren't touched such as on the inside inletted area. Hopefully the Walther grip will fare better with age!

Also, controversially I rather like the gaudy WALTHER and LP500 decals on the sides that the previous owners have removed so I might try and source some if she's a keeper to get it back to the factory style, maybe in blue like the Blue Angel model with this grip.

I'll pop back with an update once I've had chance to shoot it properly and see how it performs (y)

Happy New Gun day! Lovely gun there. Blue grip is very nice. And a good write up, thanks for sharing.

Smashing looker - and in your blue and black with a smidge of silver, even better!

(I think I might know AGF, but what is STB?)
