Hi all I thought I would like to share my amazing Barn owl experience I have been able to view and photograph from my garden.

It all started in 2019 when I spotted a barn owl sat on my air rifle target stand looking down into the grass, the stand is in a grass field around 25 meters from my garden wall and I watched Barney regularly on an evening from my back door.

I decided to start feeding them when the weather turned cold and put an old log I found at the farm on the target stand to make it a bit more naturel, this is now called 'the feed post' :) (y) sure enough it became regular every evening I soon learnt it was the female taking the food I was putting out and that the male was hunting naturally.

I noticed they were roosting in our bottom barn where the straw is so got a good friend to knock a box up and we put it up in the top of the apex and they moved straight into it and have had 3 successful lots of chicks in 2020, 2021 & 2022.

Sorry for the long post I just wanted to explain how it came about.

Thanks for posting these @FarmerPhil , excellent images. I see a pair hunting regularly in the fields behind and in front of my house and the way they glide and seemingly hover, never ceases to impress.

I feel very lucky to just be able to see them occasionally. Having a breeding pair so close by and which are regular visitors to your land is special indeed.

must be great to watch them so close only ever seen them at distance when early morning fishing

Incredible pictures.

I have an abiding memory of dealing with a very sad and tragic event in a barn in the middle of nowhere. I heard a noise above me and looked up to see a Barn Owl and its chick looking down and watching me.

Despite the horrendous scene I was dealing with there was a calm and weirdly, a normality brought to it by the two birds, really quite strange.
