My idea of the ultimate FX DRS

Spoiler alert: it’s not a mkII… (and it’s not the DRS in this post either )

Late ‘24 I bought a 500mm DRS Classic and immediately put it in a Saber Tactical chassis to use as a PRS rifle in our local ‘P air S’ competition.



During the season I changed it up a bit, bought a new scope for it, tuned it to shoot 22gr pellets, and shot a couple of matches. It performed really good but I wanted to upgrade it to a next level.



I wanted to put it in either a high end chassis or in a GRS stock and I wanted to put in a proper barrel. It shot accurate enough without changing poi but I wanted it to be the best it could be. Problem was the MDT chassis is really expensive, the Vision chassis is not available, and the GRS stocks were announced but no idea when they would be available. So I bought a completely different gun altogether and sold my DRS…



I had however ordered a barrel with @Hmangphilly…

I was very happy when just over two months ago the GRS finally became available to order and since I already had a really good competition rifle I ordered the GRS Sporter in Nordic Wolf to build a high end hunting / pesting / plinking / testing rifle. So I contacted @Hmangphilly to discuss the barrel. It’s a Lothar Walther poly barrel in .22 without a choke and with a pretty large transfer port. I would like to shoot light slugs around 50-60J. This afternoon the barrel was delivered at work.



It looks amazing! The finish is top notch and Phill (still not sure if he’s called Phill or not) not only made the barrel but also a new end cap because he wasn’t happy with the way FX made it. I can’t really explain the how and why, and I don’t have a DRS in my hands yet, so if @Hmangphilly could explain I’m sure people would be interested.

I do have a carbon air tube that I ordered from Spain and a Mitchell Precision brake that I won in last months match so I did do a little mock up.



I can’t wait to put it all together and shoot it.

I hope in a couple of weeks. I’ve ordered the base 500 this afternoon, a plenum from a DRS Tactical has just landed in NL from Scotland curtesy of @Ricey67, and the GRS stock is supposed to be here any day now. I’m considering having the new end cap anodized or cerakoted and the plenum needs some machining so that needs refinishing as well.

Today, UPS delivered the DRS 500 base I ordered from Huma Air. It came with a SHP plenum installed for a reason unknown by me that I will switch out for the plenum from a Tactical in the near future. Stripping it down, installing the new barrel, and airing it up took about 10 minutes. Unfortunatly the low Weaver rail I ordered was missing from my order and the GRS stock hasn’t been delivered yet either. So now I wait and check every ten minutes to see if it leaks…



The new barrel by @Hmangphilly weighs 500g compared to 260g that the liner system weighs. The original airtube and end cap weigh 290g, but I forgot to weigh the carbon tube and new end cap . My guess is the weight will end up about the same.

Yes but no; at home I can only shoot in my living room and there is no way in hell that I’m shooting it without a scope on top to keep it pointed to my 17x17cm pellet trap

Not the update I’m anxiously waiting to give but an update non the less; the mk2 plenum I ordered with Krale has arrived

Going to take my time this evening and assemble all the parts and install it on the block.
Maybe, just maybe I’ll have the GRS stock in my hands this week. But I’m not holding my breath…

For anyone that’s wondering what the difference is between the plenums;

From left to right: SHP plenum, plenum from the DRS Tactical, DRS mk 2 plenum, and HP plenum. The 16J plenum looks the same as the HP plenum but doesn’t have a 7cc cavity inside.

Edit; I really need some brake cleaner to wipe of the silicon oil smudges

JSB 18gr @900fps, 57 shots from 220 to 105bar (on the gauge, first 14 shots were tethered). Should get 70+ shots from a 250bar fill with ease.

someone was asking if theyre a straight swap and i couldnt remember .

Yup, straight swap with the standard tube. It is bloody expensive for ten extra shots though . I made the mistake of adding up all the parts yesterday. Took me 4 beers to forget what I saw
The beers were also needed to process the fact that after 15 weeks waiting for a stock Huma ff’d up yet again and filled out the wrong postal code meaning I had waited for the UPS guy all day for nothing . But hey, what’s one more day in a lifetime

This is a full commitment project, I am watching with interest.
That is a pretty impressive shot string, I’m wondering if this achievable, or even normal, on a DRS because it is running at this power level?

Not even at 100yds… This is just to test if I’m in the ballpark accuracy wise. Could tune it up or down a little to see how the 18gr group. 20.8gr pellets and KO slugs are the next step. But first I want to have a bit of fun with it

They can be quite efficient when tuned right. With my previous DRS I got about 42 shots from 230-115bar shooting 22.07gr JTS’s @890fps
