Picking up my Kral empire xs today. I already have a Hawke Airmax Compact 3-12 40 to go on it. The spec for the rifle says weaver/picatinny rail. Does this mean it's both weaver and picatinny? I have only used dovetail mounts before on my other rifle. Can someone explain what mounts I need please and possibly link to a website so I can see some. Much appreciated.

Picatinny and Weaver rails look almost identical in some cases and it can be difficult to determine the difference between the two just by looking at them. Even though they look similar and serve the same purpose, Picatinny and Weaver rails are not completely compatible, so it’s important to understand the differences between the two before you start adding accessories to your guns.

From the link it would lead to one conclusion and that is Kral don't know what they are supplying else it would be one or the other.

Thanks for confirming. That's sort of what I thought. Think I will wait to see the gun and see what it actually comes with.

Pretty sure my Empire xs is picatinny and that is what is is called in the parts list supplied with the gun. HTH

A lot of Krals have a dual rail that will fit both weaver and Picatinny, I use picatinny on mine but found with some mounts you have to modify the bolt as it's too wide for the slots, but mine is an earlier model so they may have sorted this by now, but there is also nothing wrong with weaver mounts either.

It’s a picatinny rail, they say picatinny/weaver because the picatinny rail will work with weaver mounts (but not the other way round necessarily).
I don't think that's necessarily true. I've had Weaver mounts where the bolt is positioned to go in a deeper slot and is too low for Picatinny slots. So the mount won't seat on the top of the Picatinny rail.

Well that is very odd, as the standard spec for Picatinny rails has wider and deeper slots than Weaver rails. Just goes to show better to stick with Picatinny for rail and mounts.

Ok thanks for the reply.

I've always used picatinny mounts on my Krals

I have always thought the same as Old Slacky. Perhaps mounts claiming to be Weaver weren't actually 'in spec' or as below, the slot spacing is off?

AI says...

Weaver mounts are a type of firearm accessory mounting system, characterized by a specific slot width and spacing, primarily used for attaching scopes and other accessories. The slots on a Weaver rail are 0.180 inches (4.57 mm) wide, and the spacing between slot centers is not always consistent. While Weaver mounts are designed to be compatible with both Weaver and Picatinny rails, Picatinny mounts are not universally compatible with Weaver rails due to differences in slot dimensions and consistency.

Key Features of Weaver Mounts:
  • Slot Width: 0.180 inches (4.57 mm).
  • Slot Spacing: Not always consistent.
  • Compatibility: Generally compatible with Weaver and Picatinny rails.
  • Typical Use: Attaching telescopic sights and other accessories to firearms.
Weaver vs. Picatinny:
  • Slot Width: Picatinny slots are wider (0.206 inches or 5.23 mm) than Weaver slots.

  • Slot Spacing: Picatinny slot spacing is precisely 0.394 inches (10 mm) center-to-center, unlike Weaver.

  • Compatibility: Picatinny mounts might not fit Weaver rails due to the wider slot.

  • Durability: Picatinny rails are often considered more durable and rugged due to tighter manufacturing tolerances.

Hopefully the gun arrives this week and I can check. Thanks
