I have recently attacked my grip with a dremel, to get a better hand / finger placement. And whilst it has made a huge improvement (+3/300), I am right at the limit of what I can remove before there's nothing left to hold, but could do with reducing the width of the grip further for my ring finger (my middle and little finger are about right)
  • Is there a preferred method to set up a grip?
    • I am told the ideal grip has the middle section of each finger in line with the barrel, and then adjst for hand shape / comfort from there
    • How do you measure / describe a grip?
  • Is there anyone out there making custom grips?
    • Is this something that can be 3d printed?
    • Once I've got my grip shaped right, how easy is this to transfer into wood with the stippled texture Walther use on their grips

Hi Redsnapper,
Sure - I have an LP500.
I didn't think that the gun itself would matter to the questions I was asking, because they were generic and would apply to any gun.

That said, I do like the way that the grip has been "stippled", this provides a non slip surface (OK if the grip were absolutely perfect for my hand this probably wouldn't be needed). It also has the advantage of keeping my hand cooler and less sweaty after shooting 90 or more pellets. Obviously when sanding the 'finger sculpting' this has now become smooth hence my feeble attempt at 'scuffing' the surface.
As you can see, above, I have reduced the forefinger position so much that a hole has opened up, I can fill that latter. I probably want to thin down the palm area a bit more too.
What I am trying to do is get the grip to fit my hand so that the contact points of align as shown:

Once I have that position 'just right' then I would like someone to make a new grip for me, hence my questions about process and looking for someone making custom grips.

Many thanks!

I'm about to have a go at a grip, this article was pretty good

Good start point :-) and a great consise article. It's basically what I have been doing - I have been following the guide in the MEC books and from advice from our clubs coach. I am close to achieving a right fit for me.

I was wondering if there is a method of describing this (probably not) and if once I have modified my grip I can get one made up (ideally in the same wood, walnut?, and with the same textured finish that was originally on my gun.
Cheers, and thanks for the reply.

If your credit card is up to it. Rink do off the shelf and full custom fit's for Walther's, it's either Intershoot or Edinkillie that carry a stock of off the shelf fittings. Full custom is via Rink direct.

I see your new to the forum, knowing the pistol helps others help you, the more info you give the more likely you are to find someone who has similar, it's a quirk of the forum, a very basic generic question may well be ignored or you will just get asked to clarify make/model/year pistol-rifle etc etc so for a quicker response a photo and full details helps others help you 👍

Stared at it for ages, decided to just send it.
Bit of extra palm swell to pull the natural point of aim left a smidge, bit off the lower part to accommodate my ham hands. Bit out of the other side to reduce contact with my finger tips.

Appreciate that, it does add some context too, your original question makes more sense to me at least and I see others have responded with their own experiences, looks like you’ve made a great start 👍🏻
