Where do you buy yours?
Butchers and local lamb farmer now for all of mine. I don't think the price difference is all that great nowadays anyway, except for chicken but I don't want to eat that mass produced crap anyway (not preaching because I did for years).
Plus I can buy flat iron steaks, collar bacon, top quality sausages etc. that you just can't get from a supermarket (y)

Processed meat, is terrible, really bad for you..as are a lot of processed foods. And farming and livestock standards, (mostly non UK probably) heartbreaking sometimes.. health standards for livestock, like battery hens etc.. heartbreaking. I know we all have to eat but...

Local farm shop , never ever ever at a supermarket its all Halal ******** , this is not a racist comment it is a common decency comment I find the whole idea appalling if you eat meat it should be dispatched as humanly as possible
Correct, except for Aldi and I think Lidl all supermarkets sell non stunned meat! Absolutely disgusting!

I've posted about my land and my cattle plenty on here and a few weeks ago we sent our first Dexter beast to slaughter.

Surprisingly we got close to 140kg of beef from one small animal. We've sold a fair bit and that has paid for the slaughter, butchering and some.

I realise I'm in a fortunate position to inherit a few acres in order to keep a small herd but up to now we've had the hanger (onglet) a fillet steak each and tonight a topside roast. I understand I'm probably biased but it was superb. Really good quality grass fed beef. The feedback from friends who bought it has been very good.

When we run out we won't be buying from the supermarket again. It might be a while before we run out though.

I'll see if I can call in one day when I'm around there. I could combine it with a trip to the pub on Codsall station.
I can also recommend Micheal Kirk butchers in Wolverhampton, they make possibly the best pork pies in the country.

There's a misconception that all Halal is non-stun which isn't true. I'm not sure of the exact percentage or whether these figures are correct:

https://www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/farm/slaughter/religiousslaughter#:~:text=Around 65% of animals slaughtered,Kosher) are non-stunned.

I'll put it on record as someone who has been brought up in cattle & sheep farming families I don't agree with any animal being non-stun, but nor is it right to say that all Halal has been non-stun slaughtered. Some of the ranges offered in the big supermarkets are however. Halal gets a bad rep whilst Kosher is all non stun.

Around Xmas the Station have Bank's Old Ale on draft. Very nice too

Trouble is around here there is a lack of local butchers --we use Aldi sometimes for beef -and there is a Farm shop at Penshaw we also use for sausages --But i can see why many use supermarkets due to the lack of local butcher shops its a shame to see another trade fade away ---we were lucky back in the day to have a two good butchers one that cut up whole animals and made good sausages he was what we called the beef butchers --and over the road the Pork butchers they sold all pig related meat --Now both long gone

The East End of London had some great butcher shops, some with black or white rabbits hanging up,smashing Lamb and all sorts of offal, if you want lambs liver now supermarket sells stuff pinned in plastic, it's awful you can walk around a town centre now and not see a butchers shop, sad state of affairs mitch21

Totally agree. The stuff from my butchers is noticeably, significantly better quality than that from supermarkets; and in most cases actually cheaper than the top-end supermarket stuff too.

On top of that the packaging is potentially less offensive, while if you take your own containers you can do away with the plastic shite completely.

I'm slowly trying to move away from shopping at supermarkets as much as I can and get back to smaller / better quality suppliers.

Not all butchers are equal mind, I was spoiled having Honeys down in Parkham but thought I’d give our local a chance. It’s all pre packaged and not very nice at that. There’s no going in looking at a nice display and picking what’s fresh on the day. We have a farm shop and a very nice (expensive) butcher 10 minutes either side, it’s certainly reduced our meat consumption

Working in Cornwall 1987 there was a great butcher in Penryn who took care to hang his beef for the appropriate period.
Still remember the time he couldn't change a £20 note and he said pay me next time you drop by.
That trust brought loyalty. We never bought meat elsewhere for the duration of the works.

My Wife grew up on a farm and her dad bred pigs and possibly cows and sheep . My wife would see the pigs leaving and the day or two later there would be loads of meat in the kitchen .

She turned veggie years later , Not due to the above though.

One thing I would add though.

As stated above I recognise that I'm fortunate. I will also admit to being okay financially. I'm not rich and at 52, with two girls aged 11 and 9, early retirement does not beckon!! However there are many people who are struggling and I would certainly not berate anyone for buying a cheap chicken at their local supermarket.

My advice would be to buy the best you can afford. Whatever it is; an actual piece of real meat, or a whole chicken, will beat any boxed, breaded, flavoured alternative out of the freezer section.

Yup; my local's like that - quality's good but they're bloody expensive (toffy area) and everything's pre-packaged in bloody polystyrene.

It's totally unnecessary and tbh inexcusible given the rightful flak plastic gets; due to both pollution and potential health risk. When approached about it some years ago they just fobbed me off / tried to twist it into a marketing exercise. At least the fruit and veg is still "pick your own" with paper bags so I do still occasionally buy that.

Conversely the other two butchers I use still has all the meat laid out in the counter.
