Anyone done any pattern testing with long choke tubes and compared them to short tubes do longer.chokes give a tighter pattern
I'm wondering

I'd have to say no, they wouldnt. I can't see that a difference in length of choke would tighten or widen a pattern. The restriction on the barrel would be the same.
But I've not done any testing.

Choke size is the thing imo. I've got a 'Kicks' improved cylinder choke (longer by 2 inches) and it doesn't seem to pattern any different to the standard ic internal choke on my Benelli M2 24".

As far as I've learnt longer choke tubes reduce recoil by having a shallower angle over their length, I'm not sure how they measure that tbh.
They've all got similar exit diameters so I'm not sure how it can affect the pattern, unless that shallower angle does.

The more progressive angle on an extended choke tube might, maybe, perhaps mean slightly less distortion to the pellets and might, maybe, perhaps results in a slightly more consistent pattern.
I doubt they'd change the pattern size in any appreciable way.

This is what I don't get, if we say 12b is .729" and you shoot a 1/4 choke let's just for arguments sake say the choke narrows down to .719" (a 0.010" constriction), its still the same for whatever length choke isn't it?
Whether it's over 1.5" length or 3-4" length!

I shoot extended chokes I'm my 682 gold E but that's just because they came with it, I'm not in any way about to buy extended choke for any of my other shotguns, I've still got to aim in the right place which is probably 99.9% of the trouble when I miss.

Yeah I don't think they make a difference really, at least not one most of us will notice.
I use extended chokes in guns if they happen to come with them, or if they're for a gun that'll need fast and easy choke identification and changes by hand. For example a S1 semi auto with a mag tube that extend beyond the muzzle is a bugger to work a choke key around.

My main competition S1 gun has a normal extended knurled choke in 1/4, a super extended knurled choke in 3/4, and a super extended half plain half knurled in cylinder. I can tell at a glance what's in it.

For any other gun its just ease of use and nice looks, I happily use a flush choke in anything that's got them.

True, I’m sure we wouldn’t notice…
My shooting is like my golf…sometimes my 7 iron will go further than my 3 iron… and my my chokes seem to be the same unfortunately…🤣
