Lock change on Gun Safe

As Caz says above, keys can be read from a photo.
I used too have a Mauer make up key and easily read a key from a photo and build a key from the photo.
I am no longer in that profession hence " used too"

Isn't that a security no no? Copies of keys can be made very successfully from a photograph of the original.

I can see where you're both coming from, but nobody knows @Wilco's address and Exeter is quite a big place.

It's a good point, but all it takes is a sale here, a purchase there, an errant address given, plus photographic templates of gun cab' keys attached to the members account, and firearms have been compromised. imo. Bit like having a lost set of house keys with an address label on, they may never be used, but there's still a risk.

Edited to add: Imagine him trying to explain to plod that the front door was kicked in but the gun safe was opened without a mark and cleaned out.

Believe me ,some give out way to much info.

Using his email address which he freely gave out and apoears in a number of shooting forums , I found out where some one would be each week and for how long , His address, wife's name , church they went to and he told us what he owned on the forum so a theif would know what was there .

Some have very poor sense when it comes to safety .

Even having a 'secondhand' gunsafe must raise some questions, how many keys were there in the lifetime of the lock?
I'd look at a new lock, sent to a different address and name to the intended recipient.
It's all 'don't worry about it', until you have reason to worry about it, then it's 'flip I wish I'd spend the money for a clean slate'.

But then I am paranoid, as the guy intercepting my internet says.

Gotta be honest chap, that’s a tad creepy. Restraining order yet? Or still happily watching from the bushes? 📹🔭

To add I know you’re not like that, just couldn’t resist asking! 🤣👍🏻

I don't think many guns safe would last long with a person who was into picking locks . lots of videos and freely available kits on line .

If they know your daily actions they may find the times they will have time to pick the locks if they were that way inclined.

It came up on another forum and the person involved was moaning that he was cold called called and they knew his email address and some other info and he did not know how they had that info.

I knew I had saw his email address on the forum before and used his username and email address and found out load in a few mins .

What made it worse was he was also in intelligence in the Military so you think he would know better .

Google your email address and see if it give any hits . I don't post mine on open forums for that reason and if I was I would use a throwaway one for the task .

Changing a lock on a gun cabinet is simple spanner work providing your fitting like for like.
If your having keys cut, take the lock with you so you know they work.
When testing a new key unlock and open and then lock the door open with your old key then test the new key, if it jams the
lock at least the door is open

I really enjoy shooting Ice cubes. I put a bit of food colouring in for variety. Can either put some fishing line between 2 whilst freezing to hang or just put them on something. Added bonus of no clean up and pooch can go nuts on em if he likes.

A..I don't have firearms in the house,, I may have in 3 or 4 years depending on how long a grant is/is not given😁 and may/may not be living here then😁

B. The title of the OP was CHANGING THE LOCK not getting a replacement key...

C. A new lock is en route and will indeed be delivered to a diff address as I can't guarantee I'll be home to accept it.

D...Police are totally fine with a used safe if it complies, is in good condition, fit for purpose and with new locks..

My intent on the OP was to see if anyone HAD changed the lock on theirs, as the info I could find suggested it's a DIY job and could be done in a day.. that statement mad me think it's probably out of my ltd DIY skills lol.

I have enjoyed reading some of the replies and thank all who have contributed..
