I expect at some point I'm going to need a set of these to maintain any future rifle.
Can members recommend a decent set please?

while they may be a nice have in the toolbox the chances of using them will be slim
i used a 2mm once and the why was this
i was drilling the small screws out of a HW45 or 75 to change the soft screw or to change a barrel
the screw head broke off and the righthand drill screwed the base of the screw to the bottom of the hole and i had a couple 2mm lefthand bits and they got the screw base out

I use left hand bits to remove anti tamper shear bolts.
Turning anti clockwise encourages the shear bolt to unscrew.

Other than what I use them for, perhaps it's convention to drill right handed.

So you use them as a stud extracter? OK cheers👍

I remember my step dad, who was a bit of a bell when I was growing up, regularly saying I was “a bit left hand thread”.

I’d forgotten all about it until seeing this thread 🤣

God knows what he meant …. Another to take to the therapist on Wednesday!!

(Don’t tell me what he meant I’m fragile at the best of times !)

in many cases a lefthand drill bit could remove the screw but it is no replacement for an extractor
Agreed. But in the case of a 2.5mm hole, I don't have a small enough extractor and the shear bolts are never that tight.

but have you had to remove the barrel band screws on a HW45 or 75 i drilled all of them they were coated in clear glue and replaced them with 12.9 replacements
now not having the right size extractor is a problem, of not buying the right tools
will a left hand twist drill remove a screw or bolt maybe, maybe not i am 76 and have bought many extractor sets over the years and the why is some just don't work, some are brittle and break off, some will not grab
they are made in different ways

Where to start ...🤔

A left hand drill is first stop on removing an anti tamper screw. It will often just screw it out for you. But not much good for the g1ts who hammer in a ball bearing.
