Is this a rat or a mouse?

Rat, as the weather gets colder they start getting closer to habitation looking for food. Have you got a shed or bird feeder? Both attract rats🎯🎯

"Theres a rat in me garden what am I gonna do"
Reminds me of a ub40 song but definitely a rat👍

Judging by the tail i'd say it's a rat besides it looks too big for a mouse unless the mice around your way are on steroids.

mice are about 1" tall and 2" long voles are bigger i dont think rats leave the nest until they are about 3 1/2" -4" long from what i have seen and get BIGGER

Definitely a rat, I can hear the rattle of a pellet tin already🤣

Juvenile rats will not usually venture out until that are 4-5 inches long (body length). Be very difficult to find any mouse that large.

Cover a trap with a small hole so no cat or hedgehog can get caught in it.
