Is anyone up on BB gun laws

Just a bit concerned about it being black and classed as an imitation firearm
Being black it's not just an imitation firearm, it's a realistic imitation firearm...... there is a difference.

It's all quite mad, the law was brought in as a kneejerk reaction to some phoney stories in the newspapers about people scaring grannies with airsoft guns.
One of the nearby airsoft sites hosted an event for the local armed response unit, at the end of the day the sergeant asked if he could buy himself an airsoft pistol, the owners took great delight in telling him he wasn't eligible. He can carry multiple real firearms around on a daily basis, but not allowed to buy one firing plastic balls at non-lethal velocities.
That's interesting, I thought as well as Airsoft players, police and filmmakers also had a valid defence

interesting question.
what stops someone buying a real firearm from some dodgy source and painting it red, blue or green.
They could potentially walk around all day and never get questioned?

I'm a bit confused here about the whole two tone colour thing. So I can buy a glock blank firing 9mm in black but not a airsoft?
The shop (although it does also apply to private sellers) can only sell a RIF to someone with a valid defence. Otherwise it needs to be two tone.

It's not illegal to own a RIF without a valid defence.... Not sure about removing the paint though

We tend to focus (obsess) on the pistols as there is a lot of overlap between the different formats. As the op has just been given an assault rifle there is a lot less overlap with the bigger guns

Still not aloud to walk around in public with them, you might get a few extra seconds before the armed response team shoot you:oops:

As per the previous replies, not a problem if it’s on your own land and not being a nuisance to neighbours and the public.
I agree it’s a minefield of crazy rules although I can understand why some of them are in place.
I just ordered a co2 .177 steel bb M4 rifle no problems, however if I wanted the exact same looking item in 6mm plastic bb I can’t without appropriate paperwork or having it in two tone colours.
But hey if laws were straight forward life would be boring lol.

Anyone can own a RIF.

However you can only buy a RIF if you have defence to own one. That been UKARA membership in the case of airsoft guns, Or be part of a society that is recognised by the seller. The whole system is designed to protect the seller not the owner. So the seller can prove to a court they took every precaution to make sure they sold a fully black gun to a responsible owner.
2 tone guns can be bought by anyone without defence, but the gun has to be majority bright coloured.

In public however things are very different. You can not take a RIF or IF (2 tone) out in public. The law in all instances can and will treat them as firearms, because anything that looks like a firearm - is a firearm and the law will prosecute as a firearm. So you can't walk about with one in public, you can't play with them in a park, and if the neighbours can see and are alarmed and call the police even the back garden may be dodgy, Especially if it's been aimed at the neighbours houses.

So it's not unlike air rifle ownership, where you always keep them in a case, slip or bag until you get to the place you intend to shoot.
So back to your grandson. If he's old enough to play airsoft then think about taking him. It might cost some money to get the gun sorted as it may need a service and chrono to make sure it's at the legal and site limits. A lot of airsoft site do under 18's games and they can be fun. It very much might be a case of doing a day with the expense of hiring a gun, but taking yours down as well and getting them to give it the chrono and once over just to be sure. Typically a day is about £40-50 each with hires. After 3 games over at least 2 months you will be eligible for UKARA membership.

There are a couple of sites local to Wakefield. Personally I prefer outdoor sites but indoor can be fun as well. A simple google search will throw up the sites in your area.

This one might be worth a look at if all of the above makes sense.

I was around at the time and knew two of the guys who were stakeholders negotiating the VCRA defence. The guys behind UKARA were very much late comers and only at the final meeting as observers. UKARA as such was never part of the original defence, just a database to store your details if you qualified for the defence. Technically you don't (or at least didn't, times change) need to be ukara registered, just to be a member of an insured site and have played the requisite number of games.

I'm wondering the same thing about blank firers. Loads of black glocks ect for sale on well known sites. Anyone know the crack with them? Advertised as fully legal and can post straight to your house?
Where are the black glocks? Blank firing pistols have to be two tone, usually with a orange or blue slide.

Blank firing guns - have to be two tone and side venting (unless obtained for re-enactment/film)

Airsoft BB guns - have to be two tone (unless you have a UKARA license or again are using for film etc, in which case they're classed as real imitation firearms)

Air rifle/pistol - weirdly, although more powerful than airsoft BB guns, .22, .177 pellet and 4.5mm steel BB firing air guns that are real imitation firearms require no licenses or two tone colour, providing they're within certian power levels. They can be all black and purchased by anyone over the age of 18.

This link may help from a barrister...he's doing a whole series on firearms laws and his first one is about imitation firearms. 👍🏻
