Is a 4x scope for 12-15 yards usable?

Thanks everyone. I have not purchased the rifle yet, which will be my first one ever, so I have no experience even with sights. I was just wondering if I shold add that scope to the basket or leave it for now and see how I get on with sights.

To add to my prior post - you, nor anyone else can keep focus on rear sight /front sight & target at same time. Keep your eye focused on the front sight & let rear sight opening kind of ghost out & target be slightly blurry.

They're same size as an AO Hawke in 2x7 x32, a medium set of rings should see you through & give ample clearance for AO ring.

You could go 21st century and get a cheap Chinese side focus scope for under £30.00.
Modern lenses, (The same material as modern glasses that are optically perfect and cost only a few £'s,) cheap and clear as many an expensive ground glass up to a silly price point.
They are lighter and a great entry point, when you get to look through something that you can see is significantly better it will be time to upgrade.
Until then don't get caught up in the 10% better is 10 times the cost.
You are shooting short distance in reasonable light conditions, no need for anything more than decent entry level.

Hi. Thinking of adding a basic scope to my HW30 and saw a "Hawke 4-32 fast mount very affordable" (around £40). All I use it for is target shooting at around 15 yards, so it would either be that or stick to sights. Can that focus at that distance? Do you have any pictures that show what a 14cm target would like at those distances?

At that distance you may notice a touch of blurring of the target at fixed x4, not enough to spoil accuracy but it could play havoc with your eyes attempting to get both reticle and target focus coincident which could cause a degree of strain optically.

One way to mitigate this is to what I call "reverse focus" the reticle and this is the method I use. Pretty much all scope manufacturers advise adjusting the adjustable ocular outwards until the crosshair is sharp then stop. Myself I adjust it all the way out then work backwards until the crosshair is sharp and then stop. The two "stop" points are not quite the same, believe me. The reasons for this, or rather benefits, are twofold.

One is that there is often a conflict twixt eye and brain as to what is and what is not in focus so in the scenario put forward by Ouduk, the one I've quoted above, tricks you into further faffing with the ocular. The second is doing it this way has the effect of shortening the main focus of the scope to a slightly shorter distance and might just give you a better sight picture and clearer image at fifteen yards.

On the other hand, could I suggest, with low mounts, this;

With something like the above you could wind the mag down to x3 or even x2 giving you a wider field of view and at fifteen yards with x3 you will be applying the x1 per five yard principle.

Yes I've got one but on a Webley vulcan and as Chris says medium mounts are the ones to get.

The fireball is a decent budget scope, ideal for your distance, ret a bit thick, but usable.
If you can master open sights, good on ya, perseverance is required but the 30 will be forgivable.
Then move on to a scope, stick with it with the opens, then a scope will be a doddle .Good Luck

I’ve just picked up another Wulf 2-7 for £30 off here, yes the reticle is a bit thick but you can’t beat them for that money. Perfect on a HW30 I’d say.

The Wulf will fit on Sportsmatch low mounts.

I prefer the reticle on my Vantage 2-7x32, but it was 4x times that price new.

Loads of great advice already given by those with far more knowledge than me, but for what it’s worth, I find shooting with open sights so much fun. Far more satisfying to see pellet strikes with the naked eye than through a scope, especially bashing tin cans.

Easy peasy. Last week I took out a rat at about 15-20m with a 4x32. Clean head shot. In the past I was knocking down discs at 50m with my .20 80 and 4x32. The Vantage Ao 4x32 is one of my favourite scopes.

All we had were 4x32 or 4x40 (without parallax adjustment) back in the day. Worked fine for targets and other stuff well past that distance.

All we had back in the day was 4x20!
When I bought my first 4x32, it blew my mind!

Ther's a simple way to remember sight direction - an acronym - FOAR - front opposite, rear same. did I type that wrong ?

So if you're shooting low, you have to raise the barrel, or lower the rear end, i.e raise the rear sight.

That's it.

Can get a bit weird when you consider the sight line is a straight line, however, the path of the pellet falls from the end of the barrel, Just gravity. So the barrel points a little bit upwards in relation to the sights, not straight like the line of sight.
The curve of the pellet trajectory rises up above the line of sight and then falls below it. This gives you two points of "on target" and the rest is just getting used to hold over or under.
