Hi. Thinking of adding a basic scope to my HW30 and saw a "Hawke 4-32 fast mount very affordable" (around £40). All I use it for is target shooting at around 15 yards, so it would either be that or stick to sights. Can that focus at that distance? Do you have any pictures that show what a 14cm target would like at those distances?
Thanks

I use a hawke vantage 4x32 for 10 yards and that's fine, but goes a little blurry under that distance.

It’s usually easy enough to re parallax if it’s not quite as clear as you’d like, and if you only shoot at that range then no problems having to chop and change for further distances 👍

You can get a paike 3-9x32 ao scope for around £50,they really are good scopes for the money

Well, if you've been shooting at that distance with opens, then through the scope, your target will look four times bigger, but then, so will the movement of the rifle. I just tried an old 4x32 at the longest distance I can get in my house (maybe 12 yards) and it was fine.

4 x should be fine for 15 yards - or even further as @chouchin66 has often shown, among others.

Many of us have higher magnification than we really need - as you say, it reduces the field of view making it more difficult to acquire the target.

Can you get to a dealer?
Worth looking through a few scopes if you can - reticles are different and scopes are a very personal choice.

Thanks everyone. I have not purchased the rifle yet, which will be my first one ever, so I have no experience even with sights. I was just wondering if I shold add that scope to the basket or leave it for now and see how I get on with sights.

4×32 is fine if you are moving up from iron sights and 4x all you need out to 20 yd. anyway. I use 2.5x 32 for rats out to 18 yd.
I used a bushmaster 2.5x32 on my innova for many years, it was better than my mates super moonlighter in low light too, he was gutted when he tried it in comparison one moonlit night when he couldn't take a shot with his HW 80 with the moonlighter & I handed him the innova with the cheap bushmaster on it. Mind you i do like a bit more mag now as my eyes are not as good as in my early 20's.

HW30 with open sights is a fine start to shooting.
Scopes are easy eough to locate if you really need one - depending on your eye sight, for example.

Good man, buying a rifle equipped w/ open sights .👍👍😊 Opens are a gateway to good shooting. Upon arrival, & shooting, set your rear sight elevation such that your chosen target appears to sit atop your front sight ( the narrower of the two posts provided w/ the HW 30 provide a good sight picture. - coupled with rear square notch. Keep an even reveal of light either side of front post , when viewed through rear notch. Your front post top will want to be flush with top of rear notch for a proper sight picture. To adjust your point of impact, move rear sight the same direction as your miss , to get sights aligned to proper point of impact.( rear thumbwheel goes clockwise for left/ anticlockwise for right. Good 1st choice of rifle & welcome to the forum.😊

Mine is a Tasco, back in 1970's when they were top drawer scopes made in Japan. The first scope I ever bought, also great in low light.
Agreed my eyes are old too, Bushnell 4200 8-32x40 is my go torange scope these days. Makes daylight brighter!
