I was out on a bike ride with my youngest this afternoon, I was checking out a couple new fields and seeing if the sheep had been moved yet.
As we approached the gate, there were kits a plenty and a few breeders about.
Alfie was asking lots of questions about shooting bunnies, hes had only a couple of sessions up the club and is showing some good form for a 9yr old.
Ive promised to allow him on live quarry when, like his brother, he can consistently put 5 in a 15mm kill at 30yds which hes fine with and understands why.
He asked if he could tag along next time I went out to see what its all about..hmmm,
Would you like to go out later i suggest and his face lit up
Kitted out with ollies old el chepo leaf suit, and sporting my rangefinder, we settled down about 30 yards along the hedgeline , I pointed out the likely spots and he ranged them for me.
Plenty of bunnies showing from 55 to 95 yds out and I could feel his excitement building although he controlled it very well, then , after 20 mins, a brace popped out around 48yd and began chasing each other.
Looking to my right, I could see him statue still, rangefinder to his eye, transfixed on this pair as they gradually came closer,
At 27yds the Menace sent the good news to bunny No1 and i heard a quite "Yess" beside me.
Nothing else showed (in range) for another 20 mins so I decided to take him on a stalk.
Grabbing the primos with instructions to step in my foot steps, we slowly made our way up the field.
This is a pest control gig so when 2 kits presented around 25yds ahead they were dispatched sending them bouncing all over the place " it's just their nerves" i reassured him.. we continued to the top corner when the final young rabbit presented at 32yds and was taken without a single twitch.
Back to the car and time to clean the 2 bigger ones as Alfie is longing to make more bunniy pasties.
Time to test his metal, I split the 1st one reached in and evacuated the guts, lungs and heart, he was fascinated and genuinely interested..
I split the 2nd bunny and handed it to him, without hesitation he was straight in, gagged a little
but cracked on with it, I gave him the smaller one and together, we took the jackets off.
It was a great bonding session, he loved it and couldn't wait to tell mum ( who really doesn't need all the info)
Bunnies cleaned off and into the slow cooker, so we can pick off the meat in the morning and get some baking done,
Direct exposure was either gonna make a hunter out of him or put him right off, im happy to say, there is huntingbin his blood.
Thanks for reading.
