Hi @Dan giliballs ,
....Or if anyone else can help answer my questions below please
I was interested to find out from this (your) thread that it is possible to buy airguns by auction and I have since signed up to Saleroom.
Can I ask what the process of buying is please?
Does the seller ship directly to you, or to an RFD, or do they deliver it to an RFD in their area who sends it to an RFD in my area?
I have never gone through the process of buying a gun and having it shipped to an RFD. If using an RFD would I (as the buyer) need to make any prior arrangements with my local RFD or can I just say please send the airgun to my local RFD, I turn up and prove who I am, pay them for their service etc? I don't know how the entire RFD process works or what the costs involved are.
I know that it is an auction and there's the risk whatever you're buying might turn out to be broken etc but are there any other risks such as the seller pocketing the money and not sending anything?
I would like to buy another gun, not sure on a springer or a pcp but I do like the big springers such as Hatsan135 or HW80. I have owned the same guns for around 40 years and despite my up and down interest (very keen at times, and keen right now!) I have never bought another even though I would have loved to. I'm not getting much younger so reckon around now would be a good time. Is there a risk that if I bought a big springer (believing it to be sub 12ftlbs) that it could turn out to be 12+ ftlbs, the receiving RFD tests it and says I can't have it but still have to pay them? Or would/could they say I could pay them to disassemble it / sell it to me minus it's spring, or they fit a weaker spring to make it under 12, etc?
I've seen that Salesroom seems to have a very high auction fee rate, something like 37%, is it a similar rate for everything / all airguns?
It’s a minefield, expect the worse when buying from an auction
It’s simple enough
Register with saleroom or easylive
Check out what on offer - you can ask for condition reports
Bid
If you win, collect in person or have shipped to an RFD (check as some auction houses don’t ship guns to rfd’s)
Commission rates are ridiculous, they are ripping the piss out of it, The only time you will get a cheap rifle is if no one else wants it or it has a mediocre description (Like the Airsporter S I won this week), or the person you would be bidding against has forgot to bid etc etc
To be honest you’d be better off buying from on here, if you want a particular gun, put a wanted advert up
I bought a rough looking Theoben Sirocco from auction as fancied a gas ram, Won it for £100, by the time it arrived it cost me £166
Opened it up, trigger fell out in component form, barrel had been hacksawed and the gas ram was a spring, bought a Theoben moderator, had it reblackened and sent it off to a member on here to sort out the internals, that was another £225
So the £100 rifle now stands me in at £430
The Airsporter looks like it is internally sound, the scope has a broken crosshair and the stock has a split, stock is repairable, scope is is a fix or bin job
So yeah you takes you chances
My advice would be only bid if you can afford to loose the money or if you’re prepared to throw more cash at it to get it straight
