Hi all

My (well my son's) first air rifle has arrived. Picked up a HW30SF from my local shop this afternoon.
Other than unboxing it, not going to get a chance to do anything tonight.

Heavier than I thought it would be, to be honest it feels a good size for me, whereas if the boy sticks with it, I was considering a HW99 for myself, but you know what, I think a 30 would do me too.

Anyway, plan to do the TBT recommended strip, degrease, fettle and moly, but should I bung a few pellets through it as is first, or go straight for the strip down?

Also, any recommendations for silicone, or similar, spray oil to keep it nice?

Cheers

It's a good idea to do the strip down as recommended by @Tinbum Nick (TBT). Nothing too difficult.
The 30 is a lovely gun. Have the 30k and have the 30sf on order.
I haven't used it yet but ive heard the stock oil from @Brit Seals is good for keeping your gun looking fine.

I just use 3 in 1 oil to wipe over the outside of the barrel etc to stop any rust.

I'm hoping to get a new HW30 soon too
Please let us know how you and your son (please let him have a go ! 😆😅) get on with it and what your thoughts are on it once you've done what you need to do and put some pellets through it

I put 1000 pellets through mine before opening it up. To be honest I did not really need to as it was shooting really well. There were no sharp bits on the piston / tube etc and the factory grease was ok and nothing like what was described in the video from the member above.

If I were to buy another then I would just shoot it and enjoy.

Will do, but it's our first gun, so nothing to compare it to, other than the Kral Puncher Maxi PCP we shot at a range a few weeks ago, so not sure what our thoughts will be

Even without a comparison, I'd like to hear what you think of the experience. Will be very different to your pcp !

Check it works then strip as soon as possible. The grease inside is designed to stop corrosion and is not the best to prevent wear
Can 100% vouch for this as mine dieseled quite spectacularly at first, and still does occasionally but is shooting OK so will wait to fit the TBT kit im keeping warm until the time comes to do the deed.

When I get a new springer I first clean the barrel.
Then do a bit of pellet testing just to make sure it shoots straight.
Then if it’s ok I strip it and do a full clean down and service including the trigger.
The fun in owning a springer for me is the setting up of it.

Yes new. Guess it's best to put a few through it first then, make sure there's no issues that a warranty would sort

Clean the barrel before use - risk of dieselling due to excess grease.

Then shoot it enough to settle down and see how it works.

Obviously any galling will need to be watched for - but you might find that it is fine as it stands.

Me again

Wife is asking what I want for my birthday in 3 weeks time.

If the lad sticks with it, I'll be wanting my own gun soon enough, as sharing will be a pain, so I may be able to blag one from her.

Assuming going forward we only shoot at the local 10/15m range and in the garden which is about 25-30m max. What would you suggest, a HW99 or another 30? Would mixing it up a bit be a good idea, or 2 of the same giving a level playing field for a bit of competition? Is a 30 'manly' enough for a strapping lad like me? (Was surprised how heavy the 30 was, and felt great to hold to be fair)

This is all assuming of course, I don't win that HW97 in the comp next Fri

The 30 is one of HW's lightest guns. Don't go for the 97 and 77, they will blow your mind if you thought the 30 was heavy. I must admit i have a real soft spot for the 30. If you are only ever going out to those sort of distances and only shooting on the range then another 30 won't be a bad decision. I can get semi half decent groups with the 30 out to 50yds, but they're not for those sort of distances really.
Maybe mix it up a little and get a 30sf (open sights). I have a few of them and my biased opinion is after a bit of TLC out of the box, they are all wonderful guns. The 99s has really impressed me though. If you're shooting off a bench all the time, weight won't be an issue, so try as many as you can. Don't rest your hopes on winning the 99 next week. Its rigged and ive got it 😉

The 30 is as good as it gets for many of us “manly” types, and the minor lack of pwer just makes long range targets more fun!

Just in case you haven’t seen this….
