On a wednesday a couple of weeks ago i went to see my 87 year old Dad who has dementia , who resides at a care home the south side of the Humber Bridge . I do this usually every 6 weeks as with work its not always easy to go as often as i'd like , plus the expense and its a 7 - 8 hr round trip. On getting to the Humber Bridge i found that they have now done away with the toll kiosks , were i would just pay with my card to the person who would working there , exchange pleasantries and be on my way . but now its all done by number plate recognition and you have to pay online by midnight the next day or something like that . So went across , took my Dad out for a meal and a pint , had a lovely time with him , then headed home . Got home late and knackered , took the dogs out , had something to eat , shower , bed . Totally forgot about the toll . Got up Thursday off to work , again never gave the toll a thought , it'd completely gone out of my head . Friday morning got up and had that terrible feeling in my gut that i'd forgot to do something , then i remembered Boll*#ks the toll , went online but it wouldn't let me pay , over the deadline ... Buttocks. Anyway today I got the "unpaid toll notification " which is for my trip across and back £54 wtf ! Right , hands up , Yes , I should have remembered to pay it when i got home , my fault I agree , I'm not perfect , other things on my mind . But if they hadn't have taken away the Toll booths i would have paid like always , no problem . Not to mention the job losses for the sake of progress ?! also the toll has gone up too . I wonder how many 100's if not 1000's of other people they catch out with this money making scheme  . So if you cross the humber bridge folks please remember to pay the toll when you get home and not get skanked like me . Whoever thought of this number plate recognition system are empty headed food trough wipers and I Fart in there general direction , there mother was a hamster and there father (if they have one ) smelt of elderberries . Rant over . Stay safe :)

That's taking the p1ss in a right royal fashion.
Thank fook things are a bit different in Ireland.
I go over twice a year to see family & always use the Dublin M50 tunnel, bear in mind it's ANPR & €3.80 a time & you have till 8.00pm the following day to pay. Last September heading back for the ferry i used it but forgot all about it till a few months later a letter from Eflows debt collection agency arrived.
I assumed i was going to get shafted but no, my penalty was the original €3.80 plus a €4.00 penalty charge which needless to say i hurriedly paid.
If i'd have ignored that it would have risen to €51.00 after 14 days.

Can you set up a sort of Standing Order / account arrangement?

TFL for example in London have a system whereby we pay £10 a year (IIRC) to set up an account whereby your Debit Card etc is charged every time you trigger the cameras.

Dartford Crossing has a similar set up so might be worth looking into?

When we lived down South Dartford was a lower rate per crossing for account holders, so definitely worth doing. No idea if that's still the case though. I also managed to get my money out of the account when we moved away from the area (y)

We got caught in nightmare traffic last year while towing the caravan home and got routed through a low emission zone in Bath that we never even knew existed. Luckily spotted the roadside sign but it would have been easy to miss and end up with a fine.

It changed to an automated payment system on the 31st January 2026.
You need to get yourself an account it then costs you £1.50 the same as it has for ages.
If you don’t have an account it’s £2.

Just to add, that if you are a blue badge holder and your vehicle is registered as exempt from road tax you can register it on the relevant website for the crossing you intend to use and you can then use the crossing with no charge.
I'm registered for the Dartford crossing

They may not all have this option and might have different requirements, but it's worth checking if you meet the requirements.

Not relevant in this scenario, but hopefully helpful to others.

Just another stealth tax on the motorist. We had similar happen in Aberdeen. There is no signage or mention of you are approaching a ULEZ zone, the first I knew of it was when I drove over a green sign painted on the road itself, too late then you are in the zone. Went online that night expecting to be able to pay, but no, you have to wait for the fine to come through the post with a bill for £60. Needles to say I wont be going back to Aberdeen anytime soon. 🤬

I wonder how much of the "Make it awkward" is designed in, to put people off visiting the cities?
I avoid Bath partly for that reason, and also because it's such a poncy city.

I'm sure I've over paid from Dartford crossings, a few times, as I'd pay to visit my dad, then have to leave northbound due to some issue on the M25, but not trust the "credit" on my next visit some months later.

Aberdeen is a complete nightmare . Bus gates , ULEZ and some others. People from Aberdeen and outside the area will go to Dundee for shopping rather than Aberdoom.

I can believe it mate, I remember it was a nightmare to get around without the £60 for the privilege.

In Wales the Daughters of Rebecca did away with the Toll gates.
120 years later, care was taken to site toll booths on the England side for the first Seven crossing.
Accepting that those who use the bridge should contribute towards cost, charges should be reasonable and penalties proportionate.
A doubling of charge for late payment within the 1st week, would be sufficient to protect revenue without motorists feeling they are getting mugged.

As an aside my father in law didn't realise he had to pay on the Dartford crossing - he was driving a German vehicle and received a penalty notice at his home address in Germany some months later! He didn't actually have to pay it as they couldn't prove they'd sent the original request for payment (he genuinely hadn't received this), so he only had to pay the standard crossing charge.

Robbing gits sounds about right. They sound as bad as some of the parking leeches 🙄

Is there a way to pay in advance at a reduced rate for the crossing so that they at least only get the minimum from you?

The cynic in me reckons they've probably set it up to catch out motorists exactly as you were caught out 🙄

Ah well I hope your Dad enjoyed his time out 🙂👍

That's a pretty drastic fine , I forgot to pay for a Dartford crossing once but they only fined me the cost of the crossing as it was a first offence for that vehicle , I have now got a Dart charge account and a TFL account to avoid further problems , the midnight next day deadline isn't a very fair system as someone who crosses just before midnight has only one day to pay whereas someone crossing just after midnight has two days , 48 hours from the crossing time would be a much fairer system but they're not interested in fair they want maximum revenue 🤬

Based on my F-I-L's experience last year they (Dartford) now sell 'debts' directly to an external company (as many businesses do of course). I was frankly pretty surprised that they were able (and could be bothered) to trace a German reg. plate back to a home address in Germany and go after a 'first offence', but they did! Particularly odd given the various restrictions now post-Brexit 🤷‍♂️
