How do you kill off a tree stump?

I've just cut down a conifer. Thinking of building a compost heap on top of the stump, to speed up it's decomposition. Will probably drill a few holes in it first, to assist nature Shrug tt

If your having no joy with your stump remover and want something a touch more “lively” you could add a little sulphur (10%) and some charcoal (15%) to that stump remover (75%).
Sieve, Dry and mix thoroughly.
Wear safety glasses because of health and safety.
Buy ingredients at separate shops.
Don’t mention my name to the rozzers. 😅

…Or just purchase a mattock, some painkillers and pre-emptively book a chiropractor.

A friend of mine has cut down a Bird Cherry to the ground and wants to kill it off so it does not shoot again.
Does anyone know how or what can be used to do this?

Thanks.
Be aware that cherry is one of the most difficult to completely eradicate if all of the root system is not completely killed off. If not you will have shoots of cherry popping up everywhere. Advice off forum members given in good faith may or may not succeed, however, advice off a qualified Arboriculturist should.

I've found SBK painted on the freshly cut Stump surface stops any roots or the stump shooting again and rots them away over the next 6-12 months. I cut down the mother in laws old Cherry tree once, painted on the SBK and the following year the stump was loose and crumbly and could be just lifted out. I've heard of people drilling holes into the stump face and filling them with break fluid then plugging the holes with tapered bungs before, that's meant to rot the stump away too but may contaminate the soil..

This is what I found. Even after killing the stump with brush killer it threw up suckers for years afterwards so I guess you need to dig it out, including all the roots. Luckily I hired a mini digger to extend my driveway and used that to dig a big hole and get rid of it all.

You want a solution that really works well? Get a drill and a one inch bit. Drill three holes in a triangle in the stump about 6 inch down. Fill holes with creosote to about an inch from the top and bang 3 plugs on top to seal it. That will stop it suckering. We did it for 20 years at work.

If you have a chainsaw you can cut a channel around the outer edge of the stump into the xezilum and the phloem then fill that channel with ither diesel, oil ,rock salt, glycer fate

Isn’t this a myth
I have 2 obstinate stump

Do Copper Nails Kill Trees?

No. It is a myth for mature trees but may work on very young trees with 1 to 3-inch diameters. In short, it depends. According to Prof. Nicholas Lepp of Liverpool John Moores University, high-concentration of dissolved copper can kill trees as long as they reach the shoots and roots.
It certainly is not
s in my garden that say its not. Used the method several times.

Glyphosate doesn't work. I use it daily in the quad spraying at work as Roundup pro vantage 500g/L, strongest stuff you can get commercially and it won't touch a tree. Diesel will leach all over the garden after rain and mess the garden up. It needs drilling, creosote in the holes then the holes plugging with dowels to stop it leaching around the garden.

Just as a warning to all about treating weeds, killing stumps and such in your garden. Whatever you use make sure it stays confined to the area you treat. Diesel is a no go for all treatments, it leaches all over your garden after rain and poisons it as does salts of any kind. Try to use approved products that are biodegradable when ever you can. As for stumps, always drill and plug the stump tightly trapping the product inside such as creosote so it can't be washed out all over your garden. Don't chainsaw grooves in it and treat otherwise when it rains it'll be all over your garden. That's 41 years as a pro talking. ;)

as already mentioned Copper nails or my friend cut around the stump and wound copper wire into the cut it's never sprouted new growth since.

I tried thermite on a tree stump once. The stump laughed at it…

At work we always used to drill deep holes in the stumps and fill them with Glyphosate then bang in some plugs and it always worked. You can get Ecoplugs which we tried and did work but not as well.
