I think BKLs are the best solution in most cases, and to avoid cheap mounts entirely, but you have to be reasonable, if you plinking with a £100 set up in the garden your not going to spend £300 on Spuhr mounts are you?
Also the key thing is they hold the scope steady and in line/level, some crap mount are noticeably ill fitting, but with most others you would struggle to tell the difference, and in those cases it may be that from a consistency point of view any tiny misalignment is irrelevant? I guess you can always try and see how good they align by doing a scope check on a vertical line placed at several distances and see if the POI changes the further out you go? If your alignment is out then the POI will move either left of right as the distance increases.
