Help with a leather piston seal

I was amazed at leathers ability to recover under the right conditions. Neats foot oil is good for leather so can be used for other things like shoes etc and it's not that expensive much less some of the replacement kit on ebay. I recommend putting the piston in the compression tube with the washer covered or add a little through the transfer port. This will size the seal whilst rejuvenateing it. Just remember to clean the compression tube of all lubricant before reasembly
Sorry jsud2002 should have stated try this with the old one

If that new one is really like the one I had it made the firing cycle like a car crash...
Funnily I ended up using what was left of a TR.Robb ptfe piston seal I had tried in it without success as a buffer washer. Behind it just like your set up , turned down to a good fit even though I lost about 5 mm of stroke.

It’ll squish…and look like the original in no time. At least it’s not composite leather made from clippings - that is ruddy useless.
It looks just like the one I got that was made of that faux leather crap kids belts used to be I suspect....hadn't seen one of those belts since I was a kid in the 70's though. I shot a few hundred pellets though the rifle thinking just that , but when I gave in, as it felt worse not better with use , found it still as hard as a rock on stripping it down......flung it straight in the bin with a few curses.....lol.

I've done BSA leather piston seals. I soak the piston seal overnight in 3 in 1, off the piston.

I then fit and size the piston seal using a small fine metal file to file leather off around the seal so that the piston drops under its own weight when inserted and holding air cylinder upright.

If it doesn't drop or drops really slowly it needs more leather filed off, a little at a time and test again.

Just assist the piston seal edge pass the end of the cocking slot when first fitting, otherwise it can nick the leather.

I did my 1936 BSA Standard a few years ago now and it puts out 10 - 10.5 ftlb. Occasionally I put a drop or two of 3 in 1 down the transfer port and leave rifle standing upright for day or two.

Yes it will diesel a little at first but soon clears.

I found exactly that with my original mod 50 seal that looked exactly like the op's old seal when cleaned up, the new hard rubbish one like he's fitted ruined the firing cycle & would not soften even after several days soaking in hempseed oil that I use. Refitted the old one & with a new hw mainspring got it up to over ten ft/lb with most pellets & a decent cycle again. Can't remember if it was chambers or knibbsy I got the new seal off but it was much use as a Chocolate fireguard imho & got binned pronto.
Only managing 2.3 to 2.6 FPE with 10.3 grain .177. Recently acquired so not checked it over yet but this thread is good info for the future! Thanks

Yep very, very low , will have to have a squint inside. Guy on Air Armoury site got 4.2 from a 22 but mentioned that data hard to come by but thinks some figures suggested around 8 !? Cheers

Cos thats all I got and have been using them in my CO2 pistol with good results, what would you recommend please? Thanks
In a light - mid powered springer, I'd stay in the 7 - 8 grain weight range. Light pellets are most generally more efficient & better performers in spring piston rifles. Bisley LRG & JSB Express are a good starting point. 👍🙂
Happy shooting.

Hi Frog and thanks, no I haven’t but then again I don’t know what that is, where it fits and who would supply ? Cheers
Google is your friend! - try googling 'air rifle o-ring piston seal conversion'

As to who could supply: given accurate measurements (really accurate to 0.1mm) there's a few folk on here who could do it - I'm one of them. I guess you would need to get to 50 meaningful posts and put up a wanted advert.

Or good old hobbies by rws.

Thanks for your replies, I am afraid I am a little new to some of the ‘lingo’ hobbies, meaningful posts, wanted advert? Any thanks. Just fully stripped and apart from a slightly bent spring I found this!!!
