Has anyone tried the 20moa shims, they seem a very cheap way of solving a problem

I use the Hawke shims (25 MOA) for 1” scopes. For my purposes , they keep the scope settings close to optical centre. Recently removed one scope and rings as a unit and found the mount groves stayed bang in line - fitted at the distance apart as specified by Hawke - 90mm. Depends what your “problem” is, but they work as intended.

Just want to get more range from my 308 without spending silly money, thanks for your input

You have a couple of options when it comes to lifting a scope, coke cans or the Hawke shims.

Using coke cans will have the scope sitting at a non ideal angle in the front mount and if you over tighten the mount every chance to crimp the tube.

The Hawke shims are handed, there is a front and a back to hold the scope correctly in the mounts. For them to work the mounts have to be mounted a specific distance apart. For the £10 they cost they look to be an ideal solution.

What I did was use FX adjustable mounts as I didn't have any at all for my new rifle but then you are looking at £50.

Yes,I've shimed scopes before with photo negative, this application is for a 308 centre fire,I'm going to order some.

Uttings were the cheapest and my go-to supplier anyway.

Hawke very graciously supplied me with a set after I contacted them for advice on shooting my HW100S at 50 yards.
I was having a problem with erratic elevation adjustment so that it was not repeatable if I wound the adjustment down to 45 yards and then back up to 50 yards.
They suggested that the new Vantage 3-12x44sf (that they had just supplied under warranty, after 6 years of service) was running out of adjustment and the springs were not supporting the erector tube sufficiently to be consistent.
They supplied the 25MOA shim kit free of charge, even including the postage.
I optically centred the scope and then installed it with the shims.
By a complete fluke that turned out to be spot on adjustment for my usual 50 yards range. It also allowed me a repeatable range of adjustment either side of the 50 yards.
Hawke deserve all of the praise that they regularly receive for their customer service!
