Hunting Having a bit of an issue with the rats

As I said before, stones held in place with rodent resistant sealant, will stop them, and it easy enough to remove, should you need to.
Obviously sealing it up solidly is the final solution, but the sealant puts them off trying as they injure themselves trying to bite through, and is a few minutes work.

I pointed up a couple of redundant pipe holes in a brick wall in a Warehouse (rats everywhere) and they must have been in the cavity as half an hour later they'd completely gnawed / tunnelled their way through 4 inches of semi dry mortar (and it was a strong mix !)

For our rats (they are French of course) birdie fat balls placed in a treadle trap are irresistible. Just make sure the trap wire spacing is less than 20mm, ideally 15mm.
 
I had a problem with Rats in my old house.
It turned out someone had left the rodding eye off in the main sewer connection in my garden.
I did manage to shoot quite a few by building a rat/pellet trap on my patio. It was basically a pellet catcher with open sides for the rats to enter. I baited it with peanuts every day until they started to visit in daylight. I set it up so I could shoot from a open house window whenever a Rat appeared. If you can't find the source of the problem then shooting alone prob won't be enough though.
 
I've used scrunched up ExMet to fill gaps and holes. It can also be nailed in long strips if needed. Works well.
