treated meself to a day off yesterday, and decided have a couple of hours on a feeder near the keepers laying pens. my last 2 squirrel outings have resulted in 1 nil victories for the .22 s400 and yesterday was no different. i'm going to use the .177 s400 next time as i always shoot more with that 🥳 🥳;)

There is only one thing that matters its
ACCURACY. the size of the brick does not matter.

But...

The kill zone is a lot larger when using something like a 25 then a 177.

Here, in fact, airgun projectiles smaller than 22 is not legal for hunting at all.

So we can't use 177 or 20 for hunting.

But unlicensed air rifles are capped at 10J/7.4 ft lbs anyway and hunting of any type with them isn't allowed unless licensed for indoor pest control so there is a limited effective range before power drops off to be sub lethal.

With the ease of getting an FAC power level air rifle in Sweden the advantages of the smaller calibres would be lost anyway and would just cause increased pass-through. Even at 12 ft lbs limit it's worth getting a flat head style .177 for under 20m pest control

Even a 20 fpe.177 FAC airgun isent legal for hunting here.

But you are totally correct, very few new 177 rifles are issued on FAC, almost all are 25 or larger.

It's just as easy and expensive to get a FAC for a 177 as a 30..

Personally I have found the 25 to be the best compromise.

.177 FAC doesn't really have any advantages, it just brings increased pass through/loss of energy transfer unless you are using slugs. Increased cost of slugs means you may as well apply for .22/.25 FAC air at 30-50 fpe and use diabolos.

.177 is a bit of a niche calibre that works well here around 11 fpe but any more than that and .22 gains the flat shooting advantage that helps .177 but with the increased use of LRF/BC scopes even .25 becomes an easy calibre to shoot at sub 12

In the UK the 177 is likely the supreme choice based upon legal regulations, including difficulties for many hunters to obtain FAC.

In a way the rules in the UK might make some kind of sense too, given how crowded with people the UK is.
