So I dipped my toe in the impact waters in January and got an M4 .22 sniper.
I use it mainly for rat control up to three nights a week firing off 200/200 a night using usb's 18.13gr. I dropped the velocity by guesswork, my chronograph was still on order, with reg on 90, micro on 2, Macro on 8, valve still on line 4. Was getting excellent groups, and over 200 shots per fill.
What I did notice that I was missing some targets, and then follow up shots were good, mainly after a small break in shooting while moving to new areas.
Finally I had my chronograph, an Lmbr, so I thought it would be good to do a couple of tune settings. My present tune after a few shots settled at 780fps, so I thought to put a higher setting into my scope at around 880 fps, so I used the micro until at 2.6, Macro 14, I was getting 880/890. So time to test for grouping. I fired 5 shots at a target 30 metres away, went to check them and was pretty tight. Returned to the file to fire another batch and noticed the first shot was only 849 and it took 5 shots to get it back up to above 880. This happened every time I stopped, even if only for a couple of minutes. Groups were still pretty good, but did get the odd flier(possibly a damaged pellet). So am wondering if the regulator is faulty.
Now to compound things I was so intent on what was happening with the speeds, I had forgotten that I had upped the power and of course the extra air drain and let the reg 1 pressure dip below that of reg 2 🙈
I did refill, and try again. No noticeable difference, still getting low speed on the first few shots and good groups. So what could be the issue, or is there not one, and secondly what damage could I have done by letting the pressure drop.

any advice most welcome

Classic sign of regulator creep. Take it back if new. Otherwise a strip/clean/polish of the reg.

John.
Thanks John, perhaps it's worth me getting a Huma reg and fit it myself, rather than return it for repair and lose it for a couple of months, especially as it's my busy time of year 👍

Huma reg and fit it myself
I why replace the reg? I costs pennies to reseal the reg and if you change to a huma that will need resealing when you mess with it.

Heres the reg :

O rings are pennies, O ring part #4 is in the block of the gun and very rarely needs changing.

Thats a fair point and worth a try, thanks for the suggestion 👍 I guess I was overlooking the obvious. I've just watched the video on replacing the o rings again and have ordered some brass picks. I will update on progress when I manage to change them 🤞

Just to be clear, it's not the O rings that cause creep it's the sealing face on the piston and the set screw. Part #2 and #9 although I would replace all the O rings (except part #4) at the same time.

The O rings on the set screw (part #9) are much easier with one of @jeffsky's witches tits, piston removal is also easier with one of his tools tools.

I do a lot of tinkering and I buy the O rings in packs of 50 or 100 (best bang for buck in the higher quantities) from sealsupplies on ebay. I buy parts #1 and #8 a 100 at a time because I replace them everytime I remove the reg and when tuning a gun I might remove the reg several times.

Many thanks yet again, a brilliant help and a very comprehensive list of parts, and very much appreciated. I will definitely invest in the witches tits and piston removal tool, and will order a few of the plastic regulators (part #7)

Thanks again 👍

Regulator sealing faces are normally damaged by trying to reduce regulator pressure (turning core core clockwise) with the gun pressurised.
Hi, and thanks 👍 The regulator pressure is one thing I have not adjusted as yet. It was set to 90 bar but creeps up to a tad under 100 when left for a short time

As they have said above - regulator creep on FX regulators is always the sealing faces passing. If it was an o ring the regulator would effectively be bypassed and reach the pressure of the 1st regulator

I thought the M4 had a single reg? Have they continued with the M3’s double reg set up?

Thanks for that video @Daztilley. Two main points for me. I always thought it was good practice to use the same thickness springs in the stack to prevent flattening, his approach explains why several FX stacks I've seen have weird (to me) stacks. The 2nd point that is now filed away is the reg should be working at around 75% of it's max.

Next time one of me guns is in bits I will need to note the max the stack I use supports.

Just an update and a thanks to @sagalout. I finally had some time to myself this morning and so decided to replace the piston in the regulator, and some of the o rings. All done without any issues, and it seems to have done the trick 👍
Slowly built the pressure to 90 bar and managed to tune the rifle, getting consistent fps readings. 🤞it lasts.
