Hi guys,
Could anyone suggest a good free pc protection download?? Complete novice with a pc apart from browsing forums , e bay and the like.
Pc was bought used around 8 months ago , quite new running win 11 . Any advice gratefully received, many thanks.

I was running an older laptop with Zone Alarm firewall and av. All free and never had any issues. I swapped it and tried AVG free version. Again no issues.

On the other side Microsoft Windows Security has been fine too.

I always used to run additional virus protection (AGV, Advast and Norton) but since replacing laptop last year I’ve not bothered, it’s got Windows security and so far (touch wood) I’ve never had any issues….
And it does work, twice previously it’s flagged up a potential issue and blocked it.
I’m running windows 11 too 👍🏻

Windows Defender (the built in AV in Win 11) is pretty solid these days. Every so often grab a free copy of Malwarebytes, do a full scan and then delete it after the 2 free weeks are up

My youngest son is an IT support professional and has been for many years, and he assures me that for home users, Windows' built-in security is more than adequate.
He also tells me that 90% of virus/malware attacks can be prevented simply by using a password to log in to your computer, as this stops anyone else from using it irresponsibly, visiting dodgy sites, etc.

I'm also rather concerned by how AntiVirus software companies now make it extremely difficult to unsubscribe from their services, which IMHO takes them into "borderline scam" territory.

I now have a windows 11 happy and it seems fine running Windows Befender 👍🤓

The level of protection needed is totally dependent on where go and what sites you visit.
If you are a good boy (not games/ copied & cracked programmes/ porn etc) then windows security is more than adequate.
However if are "adventures" sort of speak, then you need a more sophisticated protection...but it is not free or cheap...so it all depends how valuable your data is to you.

To add to the general consensus, Windows Defender is pretty robust nowadays. Performs well in the tests it seems. Personally, I use Bitdefender for the additional integrations and protection but I would have no worry just using Defender. What not to use though: Norton and AGV. Malwarebytes seems popular and reputable for dedicated malware protection.

I'm afraid he is not correct... a password is insufficient. The inbuilt security plus, for example, Malwarebytes, is a better option

This is free in a couple of ways...........

Agree.

Norton is bloatware of the worst sort. When I used to use Windows, AVG screwed the system completely.
Not just a bloatware...I see it as a virus
It robs a great deal of resources, it puts so many uncalled for entries in the registry and hidden folders. It runs processes that do absolutely nothing...lazy programming.
When you UN-install it....it leaves massive amount of entries in the registry and on the computer.
If you attempt to install another anti-virus afterwords, you get a message that an anti virus is already installed...preventing you from installing another one.
It took me over half an hour removing it from the registry (over 180 entries left behind after UN-install!!) and the hard disk on a new laptop.
So it is a virus!!!

VPN for the naughtier side of things-not rude before anyone jumps to the right conclusion.I also have "sophos" home,it's free and unobtrusive.
