Finishing steel at home

I've been doing a bit of a refurb on an old gun and now have some very highly polished steel parts, covered in oil, waiting for a finish.

It's probably not worth getting them professionally blacked

How are people finishing steel at home? I'd love an easy to apply finish that gives it some protection.
 
Are they big bits or small bits. Some cold blues are quite good. Propper hot caustic bluing is not expensive if you have done all the prep work.
 
It's a whole gun, I guess the biggest bit is the barrel.

I'm hoping for better than the old cold blue, that stuff never comes out right for me. Ideal for rust proofing tools but it's not pretty.

Speak to the member above ,@AndrewE . You might be surprised with the prices he charges.

I keep forgetting to get the Knife scales down to you Andrew. I will try and get them down this week.
