FAC air, .22 or .25

If we go nitpicking 880 fps is the ideal speed for 25.4 grain Exact Kings to minimize the wind drift at 100M. I did the math when I was competing with .25 pellet gun at 100M BR. Around 20mm groups at 100M in calm but add moderate gusty wind and it was game over when shooting against slug guns.
Haha, Game over.....just what my wife said when she saw me out swimming and the dogs decided to follow me.....

Yes i agree my rifles are set at just under 900 fps with 25.4 at 910 the accuracy goes. I have a m3 and a v2 and both guns prefer the same velocity. 50ft lbs is just a general reguirement for decent results! Again with my m3 i can do 20mm groups prone with a bipod at 100 yards. The v2 wil probably do better! I shoot rabbit's mostly at 75 yds plus farthest so far at 91yds perfect head shot! I have shot quite a few different rimfires at my club and to be honest their accuracy has been awful compared to a pcp. All the owners have said their ammunition has been bad lately. I was going to buy a hmr last year but their too loud for my perm.

nowadays far too much inconsistency with LR ammunition, I suppose SK is dearer because you are paying more for the consistency. Not helpful for pest controllers

I've recently had a loaner of a .25. I'm in the process of buying a new fac air and have been working out whether to stop with .22 or go up to .25. I still can't make my mind up, but! .25 is better in the wind for windage. .22 I think you can have a shorter barrel, lighter gun, more shots and more/cheaper lead.

Both are fantastic. The .25 does some bloody meat damage with slugs, it can ruin a pigeon. Bugger, still can't decide 😕
My vulcan 2 in .25 fac has a 500 mm barrel it looks exactly the same as the sub 12 .22 or .177. It Also it is more accurate than my fx m3 600 mm. .25 has massive impact don't think its suitable for pigeons eating wise, also back stops are needed shooting upwards for .22 as well.

Hi, when you say shooting upwards, you mean into trees etc?

I have just bought a s/h CZ452 'American' with 21" barrel. Hoping for good results but tbh they're pretty crap. Have a block of winchester 42g subs....just all over the place. Some even 'crack off' so too close to speed of sound. Have you any recommendations? 2 possible areas I can improve on are the barrel retaining screw torque and headspace. Personally I think these are likely to be the 'icing on the cake' once good ammo has been sourced. Grateful for and help.....
Cheers, IGK

Those current winnie subs are crap mate. If you want accuracy try some SK's, not hollow point but if you head shoot it matters not.

Crap ammo the Winchester in .22
I find eley subs and Norma the most accurate in my 457

Running that fast aswell can’t argue with the results. Been stretching out the he distances with these ELR slugs with very good results around the 200y mark
What type of groups are you achieving at the 200 y ?

Way back in my FAC days (long gone) I used .25 at about 30 ft/lb. Didn’t really increase the ranges that I would take shots at but I will say this, what ever you hit stayed hit. No getting up and running, simply put they were dead instantly.
Just writing this almost makes me want to reapply for FAC air.

Probly just about sub moa didn’t have the calipers on me to measure properly but my thumb is in the video for reference. It was getting late so the video quality isn’t that great
5 shot group 210 yard / 191 meters
An pritty much sub moa 8 out of 10 groups at 100 meters. It got boring so went out to 210y

Sorry to add more to my stream of consciousness.

I think people use and look at fac air in different ways.

There are those that look at it up to about 40ft lbs and use old rapids etc and see it as basically a replacement for 22lr subsonic for quietness up to say 50yards and basically like the higher power just for better killing power at normal airgun ranges…and then there are those that basically see 22lr as obsolete and are shooting slugs at 75-80-90ft lbs out to silly distances with great effect with less risk of ricochet’s etc and with the added versatility of dialing power up and down.

I think if you are in the former camp get a .22 and in the latter camp get a .25

Happy to be shot down on this view though…

camp #1.
got an old Rapid (more like Triggers broom) but confident taking head shots out to 75yds or further if the conditions are right.
Even if I was to buy a 'modern' FAC I'd still shoot pellets- 16-18 grains @ 950fps at the same ranges.
Quieter- muzzle and impact, more economical.. wouldn't even need to bother with 250-300 bar fills if shot counts are as high as stated..

No requirement for a .25, the slug game has moved along quickly and with 50-60-70fpe+ on tap .22s can hold their ground.

whoops, image from last nights s**tshow deleted

So with the new slugs, and pellet progress what do you see as being an effective hunting range for rabbits with something producing 50 ft/lb in .22
