Everyday knife recommendations.

Hi All,

I’m looking to recommendations for an everyday knife to mainly use at work and odd jobs. Something that is small enough to be legal to carry. I was looking at one of the mini Victorinox letting knives but I wonder if they are too small to be of actually any use and are more than of a novelty. It will mainly be used for odd jobs such as opening boxes and packets, cutting fruit occasionally, cutting the odd wire sheathing etc. something small but sturdyish and legal. I do commute but train occasionally and although it will be in my backpack and will be be in work clothes I want to make sure it 100% legal for me to own and carry and not too expensive that I don’t mind loosing it and can easily replace it.

I carry a UKPK Spyderco. Gets used every day. Nice discreet and compact for me. Not the cheapest of EDC but you get what you pay for

Opinel 2-5 I believe are all legal to carry in the uk . I’ve always used them , cheap and cheerful.

Swiss Army Alox Cadet is what I carry most days ~ perfect for every task you described above.
The Alox SAK's are a nice looking knife, come with a few different tools depending on what you're after and are 100% legal to carry providing you buy any of the non-locking versions.

Opinel 2-5 I believe are all legal to carry in the uk . I’ve always used them , cheap and cheerful.

Strictly speaking, while the smaller Opinel knives are legal to carry due to the lack of 'Virobloc' ring locking system.

As for the OP's search, something with a backspring and sub 3 inch blade but it depends on the budget, you get what you pay for. A nice traditional Rough Ryder would fit the bill.

Some really good suggestions here, but it would help to know what line of work your involved in, as there are many knives on the market that could be of much use to you that are designed with certain types of careers. Also if you were to get stopped and asked why you are carrying a certain type of knife you would have more justification for carrying it.

I’m not sure what your budget is but take a look at Rosecraft Knives.
They have many attractive slip joint patterns to choose from and from all accounts they are supposed to be excellent value for money.

For something cheaper RealSteel do some good slip joints like The Atlantic or The Luna.

I've used my screwdrivers on a few things; loose door hinge screws, tightening up a Jubilee clip in my car engine bay etc but I've never used the can opener.

Just re-reading your OP, if you're opening boxes Victorinox now do a specific blade for that purpose.
I've been cutting various grades of box sealing tape etc over the last week
I can also attest to its sharpness as I didn't feel the cut, but saw it go into my finger pad.
This one's on a locking blade, but it's also on some non-locking knives. Suspect it'll be quite good on orange peel.

Sorry for slow reply on this thread. I’m not looking for anything job specific. Just want something that I don’t mind if it gets lost, can live in my pocked legally and to do odd jobs like opening boxes etc. been some great suggestions so far.
