DNT ThermNight TNC335R

I find the end grain on a log works really well, the heat created lasts long enough to zero.

Top tip - thanks. I happen to have a fair selection of those available at the moment! :)

Finally got round to zeroing the thermal today - simply moving the reticle to match the position of the zeroed optical one was pretty much spot on. I did mount a thick metal washer that had been in the freezer overnight onto a slice of tree trunk (as above), but couldn't see any pellet strikes on thermal when I started shooting. Turned out this was because I was hitting the washer each time Homer face palm :D When I intentionally aimed off the pellet impacts were clear on the wood.

I then found that the black centre of a standard card target was clearly visible on thermal in the sun (because it was warmer than the surrounding white areas), and actually managed to shoot a couple of reasonable groups :)

I finally switched to a 20mm spinner and was able to hit that 5 times consecutively (this was all at 35 metres), so I reckon that's good enough. It's unlikely I'll ever be shooting on thermal, but if I do it will probably be on rats at shorter range.

Also checked the ballistic calculator today and that was fine at 22 and 47 metres (with a 35 metre zero). So I'm a happy camper.

A bit of fun pushing the ballistic calculator to the max today - 100 metre tin can plinking with a sub 12 .177 :D

The holdover was so extreme that I lost the reticle after rangefinding - only the little red marker was visible on screen. It was shooting high and left of that so I had to adjust by eye ... at least I could see where the misses were going, so it wasn't too bad :)

Just a little tip re the TNC335R. There is a flip up cover on the thermal objective lens but none on the digital objective or the eyepiece. Cheap flip up covers are available on a Bay, I found the 41mm size fits the eyepiece perfectly. Less than £8 delivered in 10 days from a faraway land. Adequate quality.
Mine has just arrived today and I’ve just found your post as I’m googling “lense covers” 😅
Did you ever purchase a cover for the digital objective?
If so, what did you think of it and what size did you find worked for you?

Sadly I never found one.
