DNA tests - my surprising results.

3 out of my 4 Grandparents were Welsh born and bred, although some Irish a bit further back - and maybe some Spanish in the 16th Century according to a family legend.
Maternal Grandmother was Cornish - moved to the Valleys as a little girl.

As a result, I have always described myself as three quarters Welsh and a quarter Cornish.

My bubble was well and truly burst by my DNA test results below

47.9% Welsh and Scottish
29.7% English
12% Breton
4.3% Irish
6.1% Other
1.8% French (might be included in Other?)

No Scottish ancestry AFAIK - so just Welsh, no idea why they are presented like that.
Breton is not really a surprise - they are historically very closely linked to Cornwall and Wales.
Less Irish than expected.
French???
No Spanish,

Ah well, maybe I can use this to distance myself from the abysmal performance of our Welsh Rugby team in the Six Nations?

Please, guys, let's keep this light-hearted and not start banging on about small boats etc - my ancestors probably used Coracles!

Mine showed up part Irish but mostly Scottish....although I am a Yorkshireman and so are all my ancestors. It also showed up a brother I never knew about and I guess neither does he. I found his granddaughter and we chatted online and decided to keep it to ourselves....I assume he doesnt look at his email or hes changed adress or something as they bombard you with new additions to the family tree. Just had this one ........as far as im concerned this is no relative of mine

The Netherlands 7%

Quite a mixture.
On my mum's side it's all Engish, mainly Labourer's, Dockers, Agricultural

My Dad's side.
That's where the foreign lineage comes from.
Polish Jews who came here in about 1880

It's interesting but time consuming tracing a family tree, I've got back to the 1600's
The polish side, I've only got back to the early 1800's
I have found cousins all over the world
Lots in the US - Canada
I plug away at it when time allows.

Ive looked at mine as Ive found my lineage (on my mothers side) back to 1509 mostly because they all lived in the same village, Eyam in Derbyshire. My Great Grandad moved from Eyam to Sheffield (not that far) probably for work. My Dads side is a lot more complicated because he was adopted.
 
Tracing our family gets quite frustrating, so I do it only sporadically.

One of my second cousins has researched the Cornish branch of the family back to the 16th Century in Helston.

Dad's family is much harder to follow - too many people called Edwards, Williams, Jones etc with similar first names too so very difficult to be sure which David Jones or whoever of the same age in the same parish - especially once you get back much more than about 100 years.
His mother was sort of adopted too - taken in as an alternative to going into the Workhouse as a little girl, used as an unpaid servant on a farm, did not go to school at all. She met my Grandad at a Chapel picnic and he taught her to read and write etc. before they married.

It is sobering to look back at the way the world was.

Different times, different challenges.

Ah, Nostalgia isn't what it used to be!

Wasn't Eyam virtually wiped out by the plague at one point?

Yes, that thought had occurred to me.

A mate had a knock at the door some years ago - turned out that he had a (now adult) son he did not know about.
No DNA involved in that, just a bit of detective work by the son.
"You went to a party in Wimbledon in 1979 and had a one night stand with Lorraine....."
(Details changed, obviously, just in case!)

My missus only found out her proper father when she was 60. Turned her world on its head, and not in a good way 😬
