We usually look at sexiest, prettiest, nicest, shinyest, bestest, expensivest, accuratest and most lovely rifles.

But what about some of the most manky overlubed nasty piston and springs we come across whilst “fettling”.

I’ll post a few to get you all going. 🥸

Mk1 HW77 - wet with oil inside.

HW80. - thick with moly.

Early HW95. - enough for light dieseling.

All these were “second hand” rifles that I acquired and stripped.

You got a bargain there pal £50 worth of free grease 😁

ASI sniper was gunged up well. Think the grease made up the seal quite well!

So I am no expert in fact I know nothing really about this subject- but I'm just rebuilding my Dad's old BSA cadet major - so please help me if you can firstly the pic shows the new spring from Protek sticking out with new piston inserted - its too long and I need to cut it ????? I thought when I orderd the correct part no it would be the right length .. also any tips on lubricating this as I put it back together would be much appreciated...
cheers Steven
