After years if worsening dental problems my dentist is suggesting dental implants. He must think I'm made of money. But, apart from the cost, has anyone had any experience of these? It looks like I will be losing my teeth one after the other, so I'd like to know what the alternatives are like!

Regards,

Richard

It really depends how many you need done.
I've had one molar done on the bottom jaw after the the capping got too old and what was left of the root broke and had to be pulled out.
1800€, of which only about 800 was taken in charge by my insurance. Worth it if you want to chew properly. Proper chewing has an influence on your digestion and health 🤔
It took 1 year in all and operations at 6 month intervals so bone reconstituted, implant properly set in said bone. I'm quite satisfied with the result.
I'm unfortunately needing a second one done on the upper jaw (somehow, that's more risky and more expensive) and that is going to cost me about 2700€; I don't know how much I'm getting back from social security and insurance yet but I've saved up for it: It's a bit closer to my 'smile' and I'm too 'young' for a toothless grin 😁.

The alternative is getting dentures. Denture glue and daily cleaning in a glass. That's up to you and your funds I guess.🤷🏻‍♂️

I’ve heard it’s now popular to go to Turkey for these along with boob jobs and face lifts.

Quite a cost saving I understand.
Savings if you're lucky. 🤔
There are sooooo many reports of people on the wrong side of recovery after cost cutting:
- Hair implants gone infected ; one guy actually committed suicide 🥺
- Implants getting infected and breaking or falling out.
Too much of a lottery for me, especially when it comes to matters pertaining to your own health.

As I understand it many dental hospitals in Turkey provide you with a comprehensive aftercare programme, this includes a gift voucher you can redeem with the NHS on your return

Not sure if Turkish implants are sympathetic to our MRI scanners? Hopefully they should be just like the majority of our U.K. medical implants.

Teeth & Dental Treatment. Unfortunately I come from the generation that were exposed to the introduction of the dental drill for wealth era, as a boy it was drilling treatment on near every dental visit! I believe the drillings I received were totally unnecessary and with no proof after treatment to go after the rouge dentists, they of coarse filled in the documentation to claim there ill gotten gains.
The option of corrective dental implants to my problems has been investigated, its not as straight forward as it is made out to be.
The assessment in my case showed insufficient jaw bone structure which would involve bone grafts if the implants were to be done,
an expanded treatment time line, cost, discomfort etc. The implants I have been informed have a finite life, require care when eating
food such as crusty bread, raw veg etc and have been know to fall out, no doubt there is treatment variation to consider. Good luck with that one.

Yeah and get a botched job done in many cases.
Whenever there's one of these programs about botched plastic surgery and dental treatment and the person is asked where the treatment was done Turkey pops up with monotonous regularity.

I'm pretty sure that once you go down the route of treatment abroad, our UK practices are now refusing to carry out further treatment?
In many original cases, it was UK practises that were having to put right work carried out abroad - and this along with the increased risk to the patient, makes it not worthwhile?

As some have said above, its not always a straightforward case to getting implants - you will probably be advised accordingly over here, but in Turkey, for instance, they possibly just do it, whether its suitable of not?

I've never ever seen a poor Dentist though...License to print money IMHO..

I must be the same generation as @Target Popper ( over 21 :) ) - teeth drilled at every opportunity as a child ( and watching the knot go round the string on the drive apparatus ) and wondering at the time - if they are so bad why is it so difficult for the man to do them ?

An old workmate had his done on Poland in 2007. £12k and he was told they MAY need done again in 15 years time for some reason.

The £12k covered all his accommodation and surgery. His wife went also and treated it as a holiday.

Friend of mine had 6 implants done in Romania, she had to go back 3 times for rectification work. Time off work, cost of flights and hotels, doesn't sound like it's worth a gamble to me. I'll stay with my £1500 stainless steel top plate me thinks.

my mate had is all done after winning the lottery, cost him about 13,ooo pounds 3 years ago, lots of pain ,ulcers etc in mouth, they ok now but he would not have had them done if he had known.he looked the same before with hardly any teeth
Thank you.

Yep, same here,

Every 6 months had a filling.

Every tooth filled, some molars filled in 3 or 4 places.

4 friends who had the same dentist have similar experiences.

Left this despicable dentist at 16 and I’ve only had one filling in the subsequent 50 years.

Back then, we had no sugary drinks and sugary fast food, maybe a tube of fruit pastilles on Saturday with pocket money, go figure.

Drilled for money…Bastrards…

Fluoride was added to water for the first time in 1964 (Birmingham) and then spread to all other regions after that. This did help to reduce tooth decay but it was a bit late for me as I was 10 or so before when it was added to the water where I lived.
