Current Heavyweight boxing

Threads like this one bring back some good memories from my younger days. I was in the last years of High school when Mike Tryson burst onto the world stage and was boxing at his best, he was everyone's hero.
The best boxing match I ever watched on the box has to be Sugar Ray Leonard V Marvin Haggler, we had a great night watching that.

boxing appears to go in cycles, may get one undisputed fighter who outshines the field long after their time at the top.
In between it's the sluggers and huggers, no less deserving but not the most entertaining.

I think the only current heavyweight boxer that would have stood a chance against the Golden era of heavyweights such as Ali, Frazier, Foreman etc would be Tyson Fury. That’s Simply because of his reach advantage and he moves elusively like a lower weight fighter. Although I think he’d struggle against the sheer strength, durability and pure skill of the golden era boys. Anyone of them would represent a challenge like nothing he’s experienced before. Deontay, although good is a one trick pony and he gave fury problems in their first fight and he is essentially a Foreman lite at best.

Mike Tyson was a freak who had everything and excelled in every possible area except mental fortitude. When Cus left, his head simply couldn’t stay in the game. I think if he kept his sh1t together for longer and defended more titles he would have gone to Ali levels of greatness. But the reason Ali is considered the greatest was because of the level of opposition he faced and often bettered, hence the golden era.

The middleweight and surrounding divisions is where the largely unsung champions were and even more so today in my opinion, but thats another thread entirely.

If you want to watch good, entertaining boxing today you must check out the other weight divisions.
Even some of the bantam weight fighters have a higher K.O ratio than the Heavys.

You want to see high ratio K.O boxer check out an insanely good fighter called Naoya Inoue.👍

Tyson still holds the record for being the youngest heavyweight world champion, a record he took (I think) from Floyd Patterson.

I used to love it on the 80s and 90s when you could watch fights on ITV. As well as the likes of Benn, Watson and Eubank I fondly remember nights watching the likes of Bruno, McGuigan, Honeygan, Prince Naseem, Billy Hardy, Glen McCrory, Duke McKenzie, Herol Graham and others. Some reached higher levels than others, but all part of the boxing scene of that era. Great times.

Who was the dreadlocked fella from that time? Had great promise but never got to the highest level.

I was lucky to meet him in Vegas, for such a devastating fighter, he was polite when we spoke.
Despite the out of the ring stuff that has tarred his legacy, he's still pretty much the only sporting icon that I would love to meet. IMO he quite literally tore up the heavyweight division after a few years of blandness and he finished off a few really decent boxers along the way.

As others have said, I also wonder what might have been if Dodgy Don hasn't gotten his hooks into him. Mike probably does too!!!

True, gus and team kept him on the straight and narrow.
In the ring he was a legend.

Not much boxing, lots of clinch and weight … AJ, Fury all those folks - so damn boring

Back in the days I stayed up until 4/5am to see a 19seconds bout - these days if my missus watches any I turn over after the first round the latest

Tyson Fury is a good heavyweight boxer, he has nearly everything going, shame he has issues with self-control and discipline at times, that's his downfall, it's tough to get so out of shape and then have to drag yourself back to fighting fitness.
