Classic Cars? You must be joking

Am still looking for VW Scirocco Mk 2, 1800 GTI or Storm, ideally 1985ish to avoid road tax but that is sure to change very soon as this government tax everything except their brains

This is me today driving the 1938 Wolseley that was used in the TV series Foyle's War

Did you go home with the red Jaguar XJS Instead :) They part filmed Foyles War in my home town- one of the old fashioned properties a few hundred metres from Hatfield Park, has a large metal frame around the steps.. and the "Eight Bells" they part filmed an episode there.. my mechanic, I am not sure if its a Singer, but has an old 50s car that has inserts in an engine panel, where you slot in and keep spare spark plugs.

If I won a classic ford in a raffle, I would sell it. You can buy yourself a far better modern car at a tenth of the price...
Utterly missing the point! You don't buy a classic car of any make because you think it's a better car than any modern equivalent, you buy it because of what it is. If I had the money, I would buy a Mk1 3.0 Capri in a heartbeat. I loved my one;
4a FORD CAPRI.webp

and I would love to have it back again. It was the first car I ever wanted, and it took me till I was nearly 21 to get one. No modern car on earth is a replacement for it, because it wouldn't be a Mk1 Capri!

the brake shudder, tramlining, poor grip, crashy ride and axle tramp are standard features, they did it when new!
Did you stop to think that they might be well aware of this and not care? I saw a guy round here a few years ago driving a 1912 Ford Model T. Do you think he drives it because it's better than the S Class Merc he could probably buy for the same money?

For anyone interested in classic cars The Great British Car Journey is a great day out. You can also drive some of the classics as I did today.

Judging by the whingeing and whining, its seems quite clear that they have made thier purchases based on Dads rose tinted spectacle reminisces 🤦🏼‍♂️😁

The MGBGT I have owned since 1987, I owned two previous to that as well. The seven type Caterham copy I built nearly 20 years ago is an MK Indy I have used for track days, with Sierra 4x4 rear diff, steering and front and rear brakes (I scrapped two 4x4 sierras to get the best bits  ) and a Toyota 4age Twin cam and T50 gearbox. Owned many classics when I was in my late teens and restored quite a few for my self and customers.
The 2300 Firenza is a car I really wished that I had kept, much better and faster than a 2.0 litre Capri.

I used to love looking at the Lotus 7/ Caterham Sevens... old fords/Capri's- count me out. You get those gents on Bangers and Cash, buying old Sierra's with massive rear spoilers and Cosworth heads.

ALthough the Merc SL129 I seem to bang on about in car threads and Harrys Garage, he had a V12 he kept abroad, its the Heart to Heart TV show one that is also great- R107- I typed as R105 by mistake. Some of the old Mercedes had Mercedes MB Tex, hard wearing faux leather that lasted decades- see below ..

Would be nice to win the lotto and have a couple of classics rented over a few weekends, to see which one you might want to keep and live with. .. maybe a £10k SL or an old Corvette or something.

6 years ago I got fed up of driving everywhere in my work van and decided to buy myself a car, something the exact opposite of the van, so small. A Mini I thought, small and so simple you can fix it with a spoon. Plus a couple of bucket seats and some spot lights and I could have the car I wanted as a teen (before my head was turned by bikes). Then I looked at the prices! The absolute cheapest that were not an incomplete box of bits were north of £4000, and that was a 1000cc engine and a trim level that was at best spartan.

Second choice a Merc SLK, £1150 for 10 x the car (long story short I'm now on my second one and still love it)

Just looking at old car threads- I had two R170 SLK- my second was the 320 V6 manumatic (driver can nudge the auto box left or right)
lovely grunty sounding engine and I bought a Eucalyptus wood laminate trim kit off ebay, fitted it to my 2.3 Kompressor, then took it out when I sold the 2.3 and fitted it into my 320. Both had ICE COLD aircon and 320 sold due to wanting a 2 plus 2 Audi TT-

Went to check out an ultra low mileage 320 in Wales when I still had my 2.3 to exchange, but that one had faulty central locking/roof, had not even been cleaned/wiped over by the second hand dealer who knew I was driving from hours away to view and possibly exchange- the engine and engine bay looked coated in engine oil and the dealer had not even left more than bare min fuel in the tank- the fuel light was on- ultra low mileage and in that condition... bought my 320 from the Docklands - my first V6 since my 2.8 Capris decades back.

All nice though the 2.3 and 320- Loved each engine, but the later facelifts with manumatic shift much better. Our heating engineer did a service couple months back nd had crashed his works van and was using his £17k R171 SLK AMG 55 , 5 litre V8 as a works vehicle inc driving around London. The boot looked in need of a clean- full of plumbing tools.

On my second TT - eight years Audi but working on the Mk1, like putting battery back in today after a charge, you skin your knuckles as engine access is so tight. Prob selling soon- straight 14 year MOT pass car though.

The first gen SLK, had it had a small rear bench seat and had better quality wheel arch proection, could have been SL territory. But the presume water based paint these days, paint protection and quality on many mercs is not the best.

My 320 beast pic below. Only 210 BHP though. Not mega but very nice auto shifts and engines on the R170 , I thought anyway.

Last two pics, my 2.3 with our first Westie (now passed) sitting in it. :(

When I left school our neighbour had a Firenze HP droopsnoot, thought it was the bees knees, never actually owned one but did get a Capri RS3100 and much late a Sunbeam Tiger
My only real regret was selling my Audi Sport Quattro

Any further pics of you gents nice old motors you regret having sold? :( Mr Rikard, was that the MK1TT 240 Quattro Sport?

Mine is an R170 320, not an AMG but does have the AMG wheels and body kit from factory. 25 years old in October, I've had it for 5 and still only done 90,000 (I've done that in my van in the last 2 1/2 years) 1st one was a 200 manual and nowhere near as good, much better colour though.
