Are car Tax reminders a thing of the past or is its just me?

I got stopped by the Police this morning on my way into work because it turns out I had not taxed my car... Whoops

It was due on the first but I had genuinely forgotten it was due, I know it's my fault but are reminder letters no longer sent out?

No they still go out - my car was also due on Feb. 1st. AFAIK it will flag you on ANPR straight away and I think you get an automatic fine through the post now after a certain number of days which you'd have to pay even if the car isn't on the road. You must either tax it or SORN it.

You might be able to get email/text reminders as well ... you certainly can for the MOT.

Good question that Andy. It looks like they are sent out by paper or digitally if you’ve signed up for reminders with DVLA.

I get an email about a month before…

Thing is, even if you receive nothing the responsibility still lies with the owner or driver.

Bummer. Are you getting done for it?

Mine must have got lost somewhere along the way, luckily the policeman that pulled me over just told me to tax it immediately which I have done...

Glad he pulled me to be honest, off down the M6 this afternoon so was bound to get done sooner or later

Dodged a bullet there mate, not a promotion hungry whipper snapper then…..

Best mate of mine was a traffic cop for over thirty years. He’d provide an initial warning which consisted of a friendly chat and a slap on the wrist. If he caught you the following day still untaxed he’d go into a full bollocking mode. Fair enough I reckon.

You could open an account here and get reminders . https://www.gov.uk/driver-vehicles-account

You still get a paper reminder unless you have opted out of them and singed up for a digital reminder.

Get vehicle tax reminders by post

If you pay for your vehicle tax every 6 or 12 months you may also get a reminder to tax your vehicle (V11 letter) by post.

You can choose not to get paper reminders when you set up digital reminders in your account.

Had mine well over 3 weeks before it was due and that was in the run up to Christmas.

I think that it would be quite obvious which drivers have genuinely forgotten and which are blatantly running without tax. I would expect a diligent copper to be checking digitally that its been renewed the next day and if not local traffic cops would be informed to pull you asap.

As mentioned expired tax will automatically flag up on the ANPR system that many police cars are fitted with nowadays (plus there are also some fixed roadside cameras). The registered keeper also gets a fine sent by post now regardless of whether the car is seen on the road or not.

Yes he was a good bloke, always been of the opinion if you are polite and respectful to Police (or anyone come to think of it) they are more likely not to be a-holes... Usually works with traffic wardens as well

It's happened to me. Now, I set the tax to be taken by direct debit. The reason I got caught out was I forgot to set up DD when the car was bought and taxed at the dealer's, so there was no auto renewal the following year.. It wouldn't have happened under the old system where tax transferred with ownership

Mine is on Direct Debit - so should be foolproof, in theory.

Due to a cock-up by my Insurance company I was driving around without Insurance for some months - it only came to light when my VED could not automatically renew.

Fortunately, no accidents had happened which could have turned into disasters.

I sometimes use the tax and mot (.gov) check service, screen print, then paper print on the wall.

I keep my paper reminder till I can see online that the tax has renewed (y)

I check the MOT online while my car is still at the garage :D That way I know before they call whether it has passed or not and can also see any advisories :)
