I have bought a 2nd hand BSA Ultra CLX. {Edit - Its a 177}

The shot count seems a bit low around Three magazines (36 shots) and It is close to yellow on the gauge. People say its A 60 shot gun but I think the later shots would not be much use.
I also had it chronographed at the range and it is at the 11.9 / tickling 12 foot pound across a few shots so it needs turning down I think.

Is Green region on the Gauge the region I should expect 60 shots from (i'm getting around 36 and its starting to drop) or is it a case of pellet slowly popping out the end of the barrel at shot 60 to be expected?

That aside, the gun is lovely and I was hitting spinners at 45 meters and I'm really no expert. Very pleased, just a little concerned.

Thanks in advance.

I would expect to get more than twice that number of useful shots from my .22

Even taking significantly more than that the performance didn't tail off i terms of pellet drop over 25 yards

Thanks John.. do you "operate" within the Green range for that or would your (example) 60 - 80 shots empty the bottle?

Yes within the green , however I did test the Rifle down into the red to about 60 bar and it wasn't terrible. I certainly didnt experience a cliff edge type drop off in fps . in the green its very good .
I wonder why your shot count is so low ?

Maybe someone has turned the power up to as close as legally possible and that small increase of half a foot pound power per shot excessively uses the air? Maybe the hammer is holding the valve open too long, but the guns internal airflow restrictions are just about doing their job regarding power.

I have an Ultra CLX SL in .22 and I bought it in may so probably this years model . I regularly get 96 shots between fills. I have 3 standard mags (12) and three bigger mags (20) and I empty them before I refill. I’ve not emptied the cylinder yet and I don’t really notice a drop off but I’m only on a small range (15-20m). Now I have a chrono the plan was to see how many pellets I could get before it ran out and see the power drop off but I haven’t got round to it yet, must try harder

I have gotten a chronograph and put in a regulator… so I am going the range today and will see if I have made a difference.
I looked inside the air cylinder and it looks like it had previous had a regulator in it (i could see a grease ring mark from the seal).
Im guessing someone sold the gun but kept the regulator, so hammer set wrong. Its running around 10.34 fpe on light pellets now, at home I am using a stirrup pump though so lots of testing is job for the range 🤣

The last pellets I was testing were all around 14-15gr and I was getting between 10.6-11 fps. My ultra is unregulated and for the time being I’m not going to change that, it shoots better than I can manage. My mate who is a far better shot than me was hitting all X’s last week using BSA goldstars. He was gobsmacked it outperformed his much more expensive rifle

I have a .177 ultra clx and as others have said, I get a good 60 shots in the green.
I always refill when it gets down to around 90-100 bar.

At the short range you shoot at a drop in velocity recorded on a chronograph near the muzzle will not show as a drop in point of impact of the pellet. A far more accurate way of determining the usable shot count is to aim at the same mark until the velocity is such that you can see the drop in POI. :)
