I bought this pre war BSA a few months ago.
It had quite an ugly cutout from the stock, and the chequering was almost completely flat, probably from sanding.

After some chiseling

A friend in Ashbourne sent a nice piece of old elm to me. I thought I'd attach it to the stock with dowels and wood glue.

I chiselled most of the excess wood away. Then some sanding. Then refreshing of the chequering.

After a few layers of CCL oil, this is the end result. I like to see the elm wood as it is, so I didn't stain it.

My chequering is clearly an amateur job, but it's functional, the grip is much better now.

Very nice repair. I think its even better the fact you didn't try to hide the elm. It's part of its life story, the bit cut out, and the bit you put back.
Well done!

Thank you gents.
It took me weeks to get over my fear of starting this repair job, but once you get started, it's rewarding to do.
This gun is still low on power though.
About 390 ft/s with 7.0 gr RWS, and I have tried a few springs that should give much better power.
I'll have to check a few other things.
