Hi all, anyone know if there is a service kit or parts available to recommission my dad's old bsa mercury?
I've had a look on here and can't find much about them, searched the web and couldn't find much more info or parts either.
Any help would be much appreciated as I'd like to try and get it done for his birthday in June.

Thanks for the other suggestions.

I had a look last night and got abit confused as there's a few different models of the mercury, so need to get the gun and figure out which model it is before ordering anything.

Regarding what parts I need, not entirely sure, so I was going to just order a full service kit, then strip the rifle down and replace everything possible as it's in a sorry state at the moment (hasn't been used for about 20 years).
Normally I'd just replace what's needed, but I have a feeling this is going to need all consumable/wearable parts replacing sure to its age (I'm 39 and remember my dad having this gun when I was little) and never being worked on.

Firstly, I’d make sure you can strip it down as the pistons often seize.

Seized pistons can normally be removed with the right procedure, penetrating fluid, heat. Worth speaking with @Martin Bacon as he's done a lot of these and is an expert.

My advice would be, don’t replace what you don’t need to, that means only do the piston seal, piston buffer, breech seal and only replace the other parts such as mainspring if you need it.

Thanks for the heads up on that, I'm going to have a look at the gun over the weekend and see exactly what mk it is before purchasing anything.
I'll probably buy a compete service kit and keep any unused parts as spares for a later date, that way I won't have to wait for any parts to be delivered once I start sorting the gun out.

Many thanks for the recommendation on where to get parts and who to speak to, I shall follow up as and when I get the parts and make a start on this.

T W Chambers Airgun Spares show parts diagrams for all models of BSA Mercury.
If readable, model can be identified by letters and numbers stamped on gun.
@WelshWilly does kit specific to Mercury and would be my first port of call once I had gun apart and determined the extent of necessary works.
Purchase of a service kit may supply a spring you don't need but omit parts that have seized or disintegrated in the gun.

Hi , be glad to help you get it it ready for your dads birthday - whereabouts in Suffolk are you? (I’m in Essex only a little way from the Suffolk border)
Neglected BSA’s like Meteors and Mercury’s are (sadly) common - wish I had a quid for each one I’ve rescued! Got 3 in the shed now in various states of restoration!!!
If you want to do it yourself - I’d be happy to lend some advice. If you want me to do it (no charge) be happy to help you get it up and running for your dad 👍
Cheers. Martin

Just won one at Auction this morning (yes, I'm 14 again !!) I'm told it comes with a parts diagram so, I'm happy to send you a pic / photo copy when I collect it next week if that's of use to you ?

What a great offer, well done Martin!

You are a true gent, thank you very much for the kind offer, it's really appreciated.
I will gladly accept the offer of advice very soon if that would be alright. I'd love to get you to do the work but I'd also like the learning experience aswell as I like to fix anything and everything possible, this will be my first springer overhaul though so I will have a lot to learn.

I'm on the Norfolk Suffolk border so not a million miles away.

I'll find out the exact model this weekend and try to get some parts ordered next week sometime, will probably check in here first and ask if I'm ordering the correct parts too.
I'll also try to get a pic of the gun to stick up here, you'll see what I've got to work with then.

Some pictures would be great - and the serial no. to see what date/Mk Mercury you’ve got.
Just message me and I’ll do my best to help - or at a mutually convenient date/time in future bring it over to mine if you get stuck 👍
There’s some great advice above in the previous posts - I’m not a fan of going to “drop in kits” as option 1. First action should be to strip and diagnose 👍

Many thanks for the info, I'll have a look at those later and see what I can find.

Also, is there any guides online for how to strip and rebuild it?
I’m in the same position with a seized Mercury. I’ve been looking on tinternet & the YouTube videos seem to miss out the bit about unscrewing the trigger assembly from cylinder. From what I can make out there’s a lot of preload on spring and you’ll need to restrict the assembly to get it apart & back together. I’m planning to use a sash clamp as per -

The Mercury / Airsporter trigger assembly is shaped off center so will need a shoe of some kind to hold central to barrel / cylinder. Please let us know how you get on!!

From memory (47 years ago) there was a lot of pre-load on the Mercury and I ended up taking the barrel off and pushing the Cylinder into the corner of the room against the Skirting before unscrewing the Trigger Block. There's probably better / safer ways of doing it and I'm about to find out as I picked up a MK2 Mercury this afternoon - good luck !

There is indeed, still got the scar on my wrist to prove it..
