Best alternative to SkyTV

My Sky package was heading close to £150 a month after the imminent price increases.
Tried ringing and gave up after being told to wait 40+ minutes.
Logged in and set up an online chat and waited…….Nothing.
Messaged saying I was going to cancel my Direct debit, and go elsewhere…
Said my daughter had just left home and taken our only TV with her.
The lines of communication instantly opened up.
Ended up with this deal.
Then was just offered Sports for just another £5.00 on top.

Still considering not renewing our TV licence.
We watch very little live TV.
Mostly on the numerous apps that are all widely available.
Have a “Friend” who uses “ Live Player” for all major sporting events, via VPN. Cant comment on that.

Well, my sky broadband finished yesterday and sky messaged me to get in touch with them regarding the TV package, I thought I'll see what they say, and Surprise surprise, just like that, they magically offered to half the price that only a week or so ago was impossible to do according to one of their retention team members... So I've took them up on it. Just got to shop around now for broadband but as I'm in the sticks I'm limited as I'm stuck with a BT line into the house.

I got rid of sky a fair few years ago, my broadband was with Virgin anyway as they give by far the quickest most reliable connection (At least in my village). I have put a zgemma box in each room with a TV and we get everything for £55 a year plus a tenner for each extra room. Can also record on the zgemma.

Freesat boxes work, I have a couple that I have set up for the parents house, make sure you get hd variety as they already switching off regular streamed broadcasts.
I don't watch TV, and prefer to stream, so Disney, paramount and Prime.

I don’t think theres much difference between sky and virgin these days so FreeSat may be an option. With 6 months in hospital I’ve become reliant on Netflix andAppleTv for entertainment. I have unlimited data on my phone and tether y iPad to it. Job done 👍👍

Freeview used to be OK, but now it seems not much on there.

We have about 130 channels, but some of them only transmit a message that says ‘data only’. A fair few of them are ‘+1’ channels, and the rest are mainly showing ancient repeats of rubbish about people buying houses in Spain.

Then of course there’s all the fake shows about people pretending to do up their properties in Alaska, or wherever. Or maybe James Martin cooking a dinner in a car park from 2005.

It's truly amazing. . . 130+ channels to chose from but the " off" switch has become a far more attractive option.

Netflix and Amazon Prime are better options, but I’m actually started to get bored with them too. A lot of content on Prime has to be paid for, which has always been the case, but they now have a lot of channels you have to subscribe to. A paywall behind a paywall.

If you just search for Prime stuff, there‘s still plenty on there, but it can take a bit of searching to find something decent.

Netflix appears to have better quality content, but that’s an issue in itself. Unlike Amazon, Netflix don’t really bother much with really old films or low budget stuff.

Netflix focus mainly on big budget, mainstream productions. If they run a series and it doesn’t attract huge viewing figures, then they are quick to bin it.

When choosing a film to watch with my wife, she groans when she sees me logging in to Amazon Prime. Still, it’s better than going down to the local video shop and renting out a knackered VHS. Spoiled, that’s what we are these days.

One thing that feels particularly daft with Amazon is the amount they charge for some of the older titles. That and stuff that's freely available - just looked at Plebs; Amazon want ~£14 for the film, ITVx it's free. All4, Five - also free (all ad supported).

Dunno if you get Freevee access if you've not got Prime? I ought to check. Amazon's got a new series of tellies out that have FireTV built in; haven't heard of any jailbroken yet. I think they're supposed to be challengers to Sky Glass, although the revenue model is very different. Fairly sure FireTV doesn't use RDK?

I've got Sky for work... Looking at the cost there's no way I'd be prepared to pay that much. Downside is I need a TV licence still.

Freeview, Netflix and Amazon Prime. Either use your SIM as data or get a value broadband package.

Anything but Sky - getting involved with them is like allowing yourself to become entangled in a fishing net. The analogy is appropriate. I recently helped a friend escape from their clutches - it took months and was an absolute nightmare.

Now she simply uses Freeview and finds it better.

Another one for older series / films is the newly launched Pluto TV .. no subscription / sign up needed

We subscribe to Now TV via fire stick. It’s quite cheap and you often get some good new films and many of the good TV shows (new and old) you get on SKY.

We threw in the towel with Netflix though. Their own brand of content became absolute rubbish and no new good films are ever added.

I personally only watch Youtube and NowTV. I’d cancel our TV licence but the missus likes the BBC. I don’t.

Genuine question - Why would you need to spend months escaping them?

To me, you‘d just spend a few minutes with your bank and Cancel your direct debit, jobs a good ‘un. End of contract.

Exactly, unless you're still in contract they will try and get you to stay with special offers etc but even allowing for some chat it should take less than 5 minutes to agree an end of agreement date.
