Evening all, I bought a Pro Target a month ago and it came with its preferred pellets JSB Exacts 8.44 4.52’s. There were so many pellets that had damaged skirts I decided to try some Barra 8’s, only to find they were really tight. There thing I don’t understand is they are 4.51’s so how can this be?

Different compounds. H&N tend to be 'harder' and are also more consistent in terms if quality, weight and head size.

JSB, on the other hand... ignore what the tin says. It's not unusual to find damaged pellets, different head sizes and varying weights.

I honestly can’t believe how many pellets were damaged, and the “fit” was inconsistent, I’ll have a little play around and see what else is available.

The figures given for pellet head size are purely nominal, and usually bear no resemblance to the actual size; it is not known for 4.52mm pellets to have smaller head diameters than the same pellets from a tin marked 4.51mm.

The cynic in me wonders whether head size is a ploy to get us to buy a pellet in all three head sizes "to find the best in our barrels", but that's obviously preposterous.

I think the premise is spot on.

My old Pro Target loved bara FT's, they were tight in the barrel but it shot them like lasers. H&N pellets are generally a tighter fit in a lot of barrels.

I found that as mentioned above JSB's recently are not great quality and the pellet weights are all over the place and not very consistent. there are some really good batches but I'm too lazy to chase the "good" batches lol

Yup, the compound is slightly harder, hence why they feel like they are a tighter fit - although they tend to be very good in most barrel

My worry was the Barra 8’s I tried were really tight, almost like I was forcing them in, shot a couple and gave up and went back to the JSB’s, might try some QYS next and see how they fit.

My HW100S used to love JSB 4.53's and hated JSB 4.52's. I tried Bara 8's recently, damn good results. Went back to 4.53's for a final comparison and the sodding gun now hates them as well (barrel was cleaned and re-leaded between pellet changes). I think I will have to name this gun "Clara" after my wife as it displays similar attributes :D:D:D

The FT's were tight and needed a decent push to get them in but like i said the rifle shot them great and i even had to reduce the power slightly because even though they were tight in the barrel it was pushing them out at close to the limit for my comfort. As long as yours shoots them straight I wouldn't worry about it too much (unless you need a hammer to get them in)

My experience with exacts is that they can vary massively from tin to tin. I got some a few weeks back and they just drop in the barrel of a gun which the last tin were tight in. Damage before opening is very common - to the point where I've thrown quite a few away rather than risk the gun even though they are only going through a sub £100 quid pistol.
Those will be the last ones we buy. The difference of a couple of quid per tin just isn't worth it.
