I returned a couple of low value items to Amazon that were dispatched direct from themselves. Rather than have the value of the refund applied as an Amazon credit which I normally do that's triggered after the return is initiated at the post office I decided to have the refund back to my bank account. Somewhat surprisingly I received an email which contained the paragraph below, Funny how they can do things pretty much immediately when its in their interest to do so:(.

"We will issue your refund upon processing your returned item in our return centre. From the moment you send your item, it can take up to 14 days to arrive and be processed by Amazon. In some situations, refunds may take longer."

Never seen that before. I always get refunded back to the same way I paid and they refund as soon as it's collected. In future if you can get through to an agent on the chat and arrange a return there a lot of the time they just refund you and say keep the item.

The couple of times I've returned items via RM they've refunded soon as they're notified they've been collected.

Your post implies you return quite a lot, they have various automatic processes in place, perhaps you've hit a return volume that triggers a manual item inspection as a fraud check.

I hardly return anything to them.

I think it’s a pretty standard reply from Amazon- I usually get the amount credited to my account- as I buy quite a bit from them it’s never in there very long before it’s used again.
When the payment is made to an external source ie directly back to you card or other form of payment it can take a little longer, not generally 14 days though.

TBH, that's good compared to other companies, I just think we get used to Amazons return process when it's kept in house, they are just trying to avoid scams like the rest of us do, I'm sure if they did not do this they would get thousands of fake accounts and thousands of fake refunds Shrug tt
