Air rifle ranges

I have two i think near me. One is £145 a year membership, no idea how much to shoot. Didn't ask once I found out how much membership cost. The other one is £45 a year and about £3 to shoot if I remember correctly. I keep meaning to ring them about having a visit but keep forgetting. There is a range about 25 miles from me that charges £20 to shoot all day. No membership just pay and shoot. Been there once and I was the only one there. Definitely going back with two or three pals for a day.

What about paper work, I’ve got two locally and ones a turn up and pay no questions asked the other want all the serial numbers of your guns, name and address, look at your passport and they want to randomly chrono guns and any that fail are confiscated and the police called. Took one look at what they wanted and decided never to use it and only go to the pay to play which is a mile further away. Any other ranges asking for that sort of info?

Bit of a Nazi element by the sounds of it, confiscate your gun???

Indeed. It isn't theirs to take, so that'd be opening themselves up to some interesting discussions on the Torts (Interference with Goods) Act 1977, starting with wrongful interference.

On the other hand, the law you're breaking with an over-limit air rifle is the Firearms Act 1968 (et al):

Subject to any exemption under this Act, it is an offence for a person—

(a)to have in his possession, or to purchase or acquire, a firearm to which this section applies without holding a firearm certificate in force at the time, or otherwise than as authorised by such a certificate;

By them taking it off you, you are no longer in possession of it. Unless they are an RFD, they are committing the offence, not (just) you! I wouldn't expect a police officer to understand the difference offhand but if the scenario played out as quoted above I would likely raise all hell on that point.

Ranges will charge what they need to to keep going.
Bear in mind there si ground rental (this can be very significant), keeping things clean and tidy, new targets, maintenance etc., and rates have to cover all of that. If you dont have many members it can be a challenge to keep going, so it needs to be set a level to keep it going. A lot of clubs have a lot of members, so money isnt a big an isdsue, but if you are somewhere with few shooters, you dont have tha tluxury.
Our range charges 75 a year (I think- should know it by now!) with a reduction every month on a pro rata basis. After that, no fees at all. Alternatively you can shoot all day for a tenner if you prefer, but with that going toward membership if you decide to join.
We do have tea/coffee facilities, but BYO ingredients, a sort fo toilet (depends how brave you are, covered shooting area and a 70 yard range . If youre hungry its BYO (although every so often a kind soul brings biscuits or cakes) and McDonalds is a short walk away across the field (NOT on the firing range), if that floats your boat.

We dont ask anyone to do anything, but have some very nice people who coluntarily mow th erange, keep targets ship shape, and such like. Its probably not the best range around, but its open every weekend and its a pleasent crew- for those of us that shoot there its a great place for a laugh and a shoot.

Im a member of Redfeards..................fantastic club..........great site A1 members £70 a year for unlimited access and shooting ................ But the next membership applications is January ................ But its worth the wait

I'm just going through the induction process at Woodford Airgun Club. They have a long waiting list but it's a members only club run by the members so the insurance limits the membership. I have to say it's a great little club and everyone seems very friendly. Membership is £60 a year and then £5 per visit. Compared to other clubs its great value for money.

Tis only taken near 6 months to be accepted into my local club (notified today - awaiting induction sessions now) but annual membership is £108 with sessions ranging from £4-£10 depending on discipline (air rifle - full bore, having access to military ranges and Bisley) with free club gun use and cheap munitions (full membershi), free munitions, targets during probation, all with free coaching, bring on the old days 🐼👍🏻🇬🇧⚓️ but the club building/range is literally 100 yards as the crow flies and 8 lane x 25m indoor ranges in one of the most historic buildings in Portsmouth 💙 can't wait tbh as opens many doors to shoot similar to my old Service Skill At Arms days 👊🏻🐼👍🏻🇬🇧⚓
Appears to be highly sought after considering the waiting list to join.

Two local ranges to me in Somerset. One is £50 membership (air rifle only) and £12.50 per weekday use, the other only allows full membership of around £120 (which includes clay pigeon which I don't do as I have no intention of owning a shotgun) plus £10 per day air rifle range. What do you boys and girls think?
I've probably used both the ranges you've mentioned over the last 10 years. For me, the Rifleman's Range out at Hambridge is the best range locally. I'm there most weeks, it's a great facility, wind free zeroing lanes with electronic target runners and open ranges with knock down targets, a very friendly helpful group of regulars there with lots of knowledge and its great value if you have the time to spend half a day or more there. They also run regular competitions. There are 2 different membership deals, one includes pcp refills from a bottle on the range whilst the £50 a year membership doesn't. Must admit that the pricing schedule is a little confusing. I often book 2 hours on the wind free lanes and then get to spend the rest of the day on the open lanes for no additional cost. So as a member £22 for the whole day. For me it's my 'go to' range and I don't shoot anywhere else now days.

Yeah, must pay them a visit methinks.

The problem for them is they are probably breaking the law too if they let you use it.A tricky question that one.

Furnace Mill, I think £45per year membership, then £6 to shoot from opening to closing,
Great covered plinking range, a zero range, at least 2, 30 lane HFT courses and a clubhouse where you can get a full English if you want it.
Visit and see what you will be getting for your money, personally I would be looking for an HFT course as plinking and say paper at 25yds can soon get boring.
I've recently joined Furnace Mill. Ed showed me round to make sure I was happy with what was on offer and charged me £30 membership as it was part way through the year. Range fee is £6 and it's open 4 days a week. For all that they offer I think it's pretty fair. Apparently an actual porcelain toilet is considered a luxury at most ranges!! I'm going to try other places in my area as well such as Throckmorton. I'd really like to use my own targets as I'm just a beginner looking to improve and unfortunately you can't do that at Furnace Mill.
