Hi Everyone. I have recently received paperwork from my doctor's surgery inviting me for an Abdominal aortic aneurysm screening (AAA)

Apparently the NHS invite is for all men aged 65 years of age or slightly older...
But apparently not all surgeries get this arranged for their patients...I mention in case your like me 65 years of age or older and have not yet been invited for the screening.

It appears to be a very quick procedure by an ultrasound of your abdomen to check your blood vessels have not expanded or become weak.

Stay safe everyone 👊😎

Yeah get it done my surgery did not call me in for scan, following terrible pain i was scanned for kidney stones but it was an aneurysm swollen nearly 3 times normal size, @ 79 i underwent surgery this year very painful, but life saving, then a second one was found so further surgery. aorta very large artery if it popped you'd be dead in a second or two i was told.

Shame your doctors surgery didn't call you in earlier!!!!...pleased to hear your now ok albeit after painful surgery ...hope your much better now....👍

I’m currently working through an Australian Soap/Drama called All Saints. Set in a fictitious Sydney hospital each 45 minutes is some medical emergency or other, the interplay between the staff, very funny at times, binds everything together throughout the series along with the $h1t the most junior doctor regularly gets himself in. Yesterday was an aortic aneurism, so riveting i can’t remember if he survived or not, but there’s not much else on the box. Until last night the only aorta I knew of was in the heart so being a surviving cardiac patient myself this AAA screening sounds something I should look into a little more. Thanks @AlanM

Had the invite from my surgery, went to a nearby medical centre a quick scan and got told there and then no problems there and then, only took about 10 minutes
Lovely nurse, scanner lady did it and yes they have heard all the “am I pregnant” quips.

Yep , had mine done a couple of years back , all arranged by the local health authority .
Absolutely nothing to it , its just an ultrasound type examination , they put some gel stuff on your abdomen then use a pen type device to get the images of your aorta onto their screen ,all done in about 10 minutes or so .
It's to detect any abnormalities or potential weakness in the wall of the aorta , the young lady said if your all clear you will only ever need one of these in your life time .

Yep, I had my scan last year (in Essex), it’s a great initiative.

Bit like the poo stick program in it’s concept - which is also excellent.

I mention it because I am the same, I have only heard of the aorta being within your heart, not running down the length of your abdomen!!!!

....I know some chaps my age where I live have not been invited for the procedure!!!

...stay safe and keep throwing those pellets down the range chaps...👊😎

Some info from the booklet that came with my appointment letter for info...

20 ltrs of blood per minute 😳

It's good to see many on the AGF have in fact been invited for this screening by their doctors surgery 👍

The purpose of posting this thread is make those aged 65 and above, who have not been contacted by their doctors or health care trust aware so they can get the screening completed in good time.
