Hi,
I bought a new-to-me HW97 last week. Only had half an hour to play with it and it was very windy so I figured no point in testing accuracy, ill get the chrono out.
Was getting 10.2ft-lb with baracuda ft at 9.6 grain. It was very twangy compared to my previous HW97's.

Anyway, fast forward to this morning when I had time to have a proper wee go with it but it was tipping it down so thought I'd get it apart, relube and see if there was anything else going on.

Innards we're full of sticky yellow grease, i assume the original factory stuff, so got it all de-greased. The spring guide was pretty loose fitting. I was going to pop a TbT kit innit that I'd taken out of a previous rifle but once I'd polished the ends of the spring and found that the guide fitted much much better in the other end I lubed everything with the proper stuff and rebuilt. There were two piston weights and two washers in it, which feels like a lot, but i popped them back in anyway.

Managed a few shots over the chrono. Now getting 10.4ft-lb with the baracuda ft's however, more importantly the twang is gone! Happy days.

Tested a few more pellets.
Rws superfield ultra heavy 9.6ft-lb
Rws superdomes 10.6ft-lb
Econ II 10.5ft-lb

Will hopefully get a chance to shoot some paper later and give it a proper shake down.

Cool. i may have a tin of jsb exacts somewhere.
Ill see how I get on when the rain stops. I'm mot chasing ultimate power. Just a well mannered accurate rifle.... searching for goldilocks! 😉
 
Try Bisley long range gold, a light pellet but you might be surprised. Use them in my LGU at 40yds gives 5p groups
 
In .177, JSB Express 7.9 is one I'd highly recommend
Good to compare muzzle energy levels with too, in springers

I've not known any HW shoot badly with them
 
RWS Hobys 7 grain i check power with them, the jsb RS are ok in some .177s , my 97.177s my old one likes H&N FTTs then Baracuba FTs, my latest 97( .177 now my lads gun) thats JSB RS then H&N FTTs.
 
10.7ft-lb with aa diablo field, jsb exact and baracuda 8s. All 8.4 grain pellets so makes sense. 10.8ft-lb with the meisterkugeln rifle 8.2 grain.
Too windy for accuracy testing today sadly.
 
An interesting read and it looks great, you’ve got a keeper there.

I’ve got a HW97KT which is perfect in every way except for the terrible twang, sounds like someone banging cymbals next to my ear, I was toying with fitting a TBT kit just to cure the noise issue (which I’ll probably do anyway) but having read this I think I’ll strip it first and give it a regrease to see if that somewhat mutes it a bit.

My spring guide was really loose, it fitted much tighter in the other end of the spring. Id wager that had a bigger effect on twang than lube.
Worth a check.
 
If i were so concerned about noise "Twang" i was prepared to like other greases try too.strip it or fit a kit to it to eliminate twang, i would not use Molly grease on the spring, but i would use a grease with a decent % of calcium sulfonate in its mix rather than a high molly grease. Myself i would use morris k90 because i have access to it free, this has no harmful heavy metals in it whatsoever and hangs on to springs prevents rusting and not only has a better chance of de twanging its going to do it for longer. .

I used Abbey lt2 on the spring. Bumslide on other metal to metal contact points.
